Bail men are never completely
happy, although possessed of everything
that this world can bestow, and good
men are never completely miserable,
although deprived of everything that the
world can take away.
—The New York Tribune foots up
the bank swindlings and embezzle
ments from May, ld(is, to May, lHtiti. at
about $8,164,000, besides $3,472,000 of
what it ealls “vulgar and violent rob
beries."
—lt is stated by recent advices from
England, that in the House of Commons,
every Catholic member from Ireland,
with one exception, Mr. McKenna,
voted with the Liberal party in favor of
the Reform Bill. It is the first time
they have voted as a unit since the days
of O'Connell.
—The most extraordinary instance of
patience on record, in modern time,
is that ofßn Illinois Judge, who listened
s lently for two days while a couple of
w a-ily attorneys contended about the
;oiistruction of an act of the Legislature,
and then ended the controversy by
quietly remarking, “Gentlemen, the law
s repealed.”
—Every young man is eagerly asking
the best way of getting on in liie. The
Bible gives a very short answer to the
question—“ Walk in the way of good
men, and keep the paths of the right
eous.” A great many books of advice
and direction have been written, but
here is the gist of them all.
—A Texas journal, denouncing the
Civil Rights Bill, and the Texas papers
that approve it, says: “We’ve buried
the hatchet—yes, and we’ve eaten dirt
enough to cover it for ever; but,’as some
emphatic writer sitys, ‘d'—d if we have
much respect fer the man who pretends
that he likes it.’ ”
—The Louisville Journal has been
shown, by a gentleman ot that city, a
sample o*plug tobacco, manufactured
from brown paper and tobacco sterns.
The plugs are scented with liquorice,
and painted with lamp black. The
market has been flooded with this bogus
article, which beats wooden hams and
nutmegs. YVe presume it will be found
a harmless substitute for the original
niggerhead twist.
—There is some alarm in England at
the probable exhaustion of its co i!
liehls. The Pall 6all Gazette observes
that, “by inevitable re fee nee, the ex
haustion of our coal fields .must in
volve the collapse of our manufacturing
and commercial supremacy, and, there
fore, of our national prosperity; and, by
an equally inevitable inference, such
exhaustion must ensue, and ensue ere
long, if our present increasing ratio of
consumption be continued.” ■
—A Society has been formed by the
Hebrew ladies of Richmond lor the pur
pose of faring for the graves of the
Is radius'll soldiers of the Confederate
army, who have been interred iu their
Cemetery on Shockoe Hill. This Soci
ety will not come in conflict with the
others already formed, but is merely
intended for the deceased of their own
persuasion, while they have all joined
in the general associations for Holly
wood and Oakwood, recently estab
lished.
—The recent demonstration in New
York in honor of Head Centre
appears to have been a success in point
of numbers only, says the Charleston
Daily Sews. In point of enthu
siasm it fell far behind the usual
gatherings of Irishmen, when they de
sire to express their sentiments in favor
of any particular movement or cause.
Beyond tlie mere vulgar curiosity to see
the most prominent Fenian, there ap
pears to have been no great demonstra
tion, evincing either hope or faith in
the man who preters to be tilled the
(jjiief Organizer of the Irish Republic,
nor was the speech' of Mr. Stephens, as
reported in the New York papers, caleu
lated to convince Irishmen that their
down trodden country is likely to be
liberated under the leadership of such
an “organizer.” Mr. Stephens does not
propose to heal the differences between
the two parties of Fenians by setting
l>olh factions at work doing whatever
will best advance Irish liberty, but he
sustains and endorses the “Union
Square - ’ party, and expects to become
Head Centre, in'a Republican country —
by mere force of demanding from the
leaders here their resignations, and there
after expecting them, and the people
they represent, to blindly obey such
orders as he may see fit to issue. Irish
men in America are not likely to follow
a chief who holds that office by his own
assumption ot authority, and who lias
given no evidence of his ability to ac
complish a teat which is so clearly Uto
pian.
