| “Dixie.” —An imaginary place some
where in the Southern States of America,
j celebrated in a popular negro melody
as a perfect paradise of luxurious ease
and enjoyment. The term is often used
as a collective designation ofthe Southern
Slates. A correspondence of the Aete
Oilniiin Della, has given the following
account of th'- original and early appli
cation of the same :
“I do not wish to spoil a pretty illu
Sion; but the real truth is that Dixie is
an indigenous Northern negro refrain, as
common to the writer as lamp posts in
New York city, seventy or seventy five
years ago. It was one of the every-day
allusions of boys at that time, in all their
out door sports. And no one ever beer 1
of Dixie's Land being other than Man
hattan Island until recently, when it has
been erroneously supposed to refer to the
South, from its connection with pathetic
negro allegory. When slavery existed in
New York, one ‘Dixy’ owned a large tract
of land on Manhattan Island, and a large
number of slaves. The increase of the
slaves and the increase of Abolition sen
timent caused an emigration to the slaves
to a more thorough and secure slave sec.
tion; and the negroes who were thus
sent off (many being born there) nat
urally looked back to their old homes
where they had lived in clover, with feel
ings of regret, as they could not imagine
any place like Dixy’s. Hence it became
syuottitnous with an ideal locality com
bining ease, comfort and material hap.
pinessot every description. In those days
negro singing and minstrelsy were in
their infancy, and any subject that could
be wrought into a ballad was eagerly
picked up. This was the case with
‘Dixie.’ It originated in New York, and
assumed the proportions of a song there
In its travels it has been enlarged and
has ’gathered moss.’ It has picked up
a note here and there. A chorus has
been added to it; and from an indistinct
chart! of twovos three notes, it has be
come an elaborate melody. But the sac
that it is not a Southern song cannot be
rubbed out. The fallacy is so popular to
the contrary that I have thus been at
pains to state the real origin of it.”
The Bnmsn Union Jack.— The
Union Jack, that “ Meteor Flag of Eng
’und,” is now » combination oftheCrosses
of SS. Os :gc, Andrew and Patrick,
which combined represent the tbyee king
doms united under the sway of ihe C'-own
of England. The original Union Jack
was formed of Crosses of SS. George and
Andrew, and deflated to be the national
ensign by James I, ou the union of the
kingdoms of England and Scotland.
But ct the beginning of the present cen
; my. 1801, when Ireland was united to
'lie kingdom of Great Britain, it became j
necessary to add the Cross of St. Pat-!
rick. The present Jack is blazoned as
follows :
“On a field azure, surmounted by that
of St. Patrick, rules overall the cross
of George fimbriated by the second. ’
The Union Jack is only used on flags,
except on the shield placed by the side
of the figure of Brittanuia (there are
two t’s for the Britannarium on our
copper coins, but only one on the sil
ver), on our pennies and halfpennies
It was granted as an honorable augmen
tation to the late Duke of Wellington tc
be borne on a shield of pretence. The
term Jack is supposed to have origin a
ted from Jaqnes, the French word foi
James, the monarch who first ordered its
use. [gr J
