Jilt Dailg IQrrss. lABBKST CITY CIRCULATION. AUGUSTA, <»A.« WEDNESDAY MORNINU...M»y SO, 18«6 IT IN MINI* THAT TIIK ■daily PRESS ADVERTISES moke VHKAPLY TUAN ANY DAILY IN THE city, aiebchants wiio desire to reach families will find IT A MOST VALUABLE MEDIUM. Radicalism Decaying at the Root. There fire pleasing aspects in the political firmament. Here and there, the dark clouds seem to break aud per mit a gleam of sunshine to come through, or expose to view a “blue patch large enough to make a pair of pants,” which, in olden times, the weatherwise con sidered a sure prognostic of fair weather. Let us hope that these signs may not fail; but that they may be in reality the harbinger of brighter days in store for us. Already has Staunton left the sinking ship of Radicalism and taken refuge in the staunch vessel of which Andy John son is the pilot. With him is Seward, the wily, and McCullough the astute j aud anon comes over the Radical Gov. Swan of "Maryland, my Maryland,” and, “the cry is still thev come.” Lane, the virulent, of Indiana, declines to be a candidate for re-election to the Senate; the electiou of others of the same hue, in other States seems doubtful, and to crown the evidences of decay and ap proaching defeat, the “Constitutional Amendment” of the so-called Recon struction Committee is killed in u caucus of the Radical Senate I These are, indeed, hopeful signs; but they are only the grumblings of the . distant thunder, the indications of the terrible popular upheaval which is slowly but surely coming to crush the dynasty of tyranny and injustice at Washington, and to sustain the President in his wise and constitutional policy. It is reported that our Minister to the Court of Portugal, Mr. Harvey, has written to President Johnson, advising him to “disperse Congress at the point of the bayonet.” This may or may not be true; but we do not deem it necessary. A free Government wants no bayonets to sustain it. Whatever crashing out is done must he by the popular will aud by popular action ; and we believe that the time is now rapidly approaching when the people of the whole Union are beginning to understand that the policy, of the Radicals not to effect any good for the country, but simply to establish themselves in power, and to secure its patronage and its spoils unto themselves. This is the reason they resist the President and denounce his policy. This is the reason why they crush out debate in the House of Repre sentatives ; aud this is the reason why they persist in keeping Southern Representatives out of their seats, and eject conservative members from theirs. But the hand-writing is on the wail. The day of retribution is upon them ; and beneath the clamors of an insulted and infuriated populace, these unwise legislators, these revolutionary icono* clausts roust give way; must either repent their errors, and prove their re pentance sincere by their acts, or else vanish into thin air. Let us hope for the best. The signs are propitious. Radicalism is decaying at the root, and must soon' tumble to the ground. Courage, Conservatives! Democrats! Patriots 1 “There is life in the okl laud yet 1” —Mr. Cyrus VV. Field recently re turned from England in the Persia, after having arranged another great ex pedition to lay the Atlantic telegraph cable. This is his thirty-sixth voyage across the ocean on this enterprise, to which he has devoted the last twelve 3'ears of his life. Such indomitable per severance deserves success, and, we trust, will command it. All prepara tions are going forward with the greatest rapidity. The contractors are manufac turing over a hundred miles of.cable per week. Mr. Field will remain here but six weeks, then return to England to join the Great Eastern, which is ex pected to sail on the last of June. All connected with the former expedition feel sure of success this time. They hope to have telegraphic communica tion established between England and the United States in July.— The 'lele grapher. —A child died in Paris, recently, poisoned by the application of tobacco juice, mixed with lard, to his head. It should never be forgotten that the essen tial principle of tobacco is nicotine, one of the most deadly poisons known. —Railways are in such high favor in Russia that the landed proprietors fre quently give up their lands gratuitously, and their example is followed ns far as ;s.»sible by the towus and villages.
