FRIDAY MORNING Juue 1, 1666
SCISSORS.
—Rev. Samuel Dunn, an English
Methodist, is exhibiting to admiring
congregations, various relies; among
others, a piece of John Wesley’s preach
ing gown, two neck ties of Rev. Charles
Wesley, and the spectacles, comb, and
pocket boWt of Dr. Adam Clark.
—The construction of a submarine
tunnel between Calais and Dover is
seriously contemplated. Levels have
been taken, plans drawn, and a special
commission lias reported /to the Em
peror of the French on the feasibility of
the scheme.
—A writer in the New Orleans Chris
tian Advocate, who has been making
some iuquity into the matter, says that,
so far as he has ascertained, between
1,000 and 1,200 Church houses were
burned duriug ihe war. These Church
es. he tliinks, had cost the people not
less than In the loss, the
Methodists were the greatest sufferers,
the Baptists next; then the Presbyte
rians ; lh4 Catholics last.
—Baptist newspapers are being re
suscitated in all the South, a.id as a
general rule they are better printed and
more-ably edited than before the war.
Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Ten
nessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi have
new Baptist papers of their own. The
late effort at re union between this de
nomination and the Disciples (Camp
bellites) lias proved to be a failure, and
the Baptists will go on with their former
agencies as an evangelical and influen
tial Church.
—Our ‘’devil,” like'most of “printer's
devils,” is a great admirer of the ladies,
and, of course, has a “sweetheart.” A
few nights ago, he and his lady love
were on their way to the Methodist
Church, walking along and chatting
briskly on the numerous topics of the
day, when she suddenly caught his hand,
and looking up smilingly in his face,
asked : "“Do you kncrV wftV T eauiit/t
get religion ?” “No, my dear, I do
not,” he replied. “It is because I love
the Devil /” “I golly, I’nt glad you are
a sinner!”— Owensboro' Monitor.
—At a New York hotel, recently, a
newly married couple made their ap
pearance, and, when seated at the din
ner table, their affectionate conduct and
somewhat awkward manner of making
their wants known attracted the attei j
tion of the other guesls, who eyed the
loving pair so closely, and so failed to
conceal their amusement, that tho ver
dant husband exclaimed : “AVhat are
you laughing at 7 I've been married a
week /”
—A rich man by the name of Hopp
was recently tried in Chicago for the
deliberate murder of his wife. He was
acquitted ou the plea of insanity. A
motion was made to hold him in con
finement as a lunatic, when the Judge
decided that as he was insane only on
the one subject of his wife’s alleged
infidelity, and as he had removed that
c-ause of mental disturbance, he was a
safe man in the community and nnfst
be discharged! Gentlemen whoso
.wives have become an incumbrance will
make a mem.
—I never tasted a better turkey than
he gave us, and upon complimenting
him upon its great delicacy, I learned
from him the Egyptian secret of ren
dering the flesh particularly tender.
Half an hour before the bird is killed, a
glass of brandy is poured down its
throat, which produces intoxication, and
the flesh of the tipsy turkey acquires a
tenderness superior to that which is
produced even by long keeping.— Mrs.
Homer's Pilgrimage.
There is a mountain of flue rock salt
on the Colorado river, in Arizona, lying
in cubes of all sizes, and so pure you
would never dream of its being salt if
you did not put it to your tongue. It
more resembles broken] chunks of the
finest plate glass. There is not a par
ticle of foreign matter in it, and there is
enough of the article to supply the pop
ulation for centuries.
—ln Havana the principal theme of
conversation is the suppression of books,
newspapers, and-all conversation, other
than that relating to their work, among
operatives in cigar and other manufac
tories. This high-handed measure is
increasing the discontent among the
people, and together with other tyran
nies is likely to bring on a revolt.

LOOK TO YOUR ROOFS.
Having secured the state
RIGHT OF THE
PATENT MICA ROOFING,
We arc now prepared to supply it in any
quantity, or to apply it to Roofs.
Tho MICA ROOFING is adapted to build
ings of every description, aiul can be ap
plied to Steep or Flat Roofs, or over old
Shingle Roofs, without removing the shin
gles. Wo recommend its use on Factories,
Foundries, Store Houses, Cotton Sheds,
Railroad Depots and upon all buildings
where steam i6 used, and a Fire Proof re
quired.
7J&T* It costs about one-half tho prioe of
Tin.
It is cheap, durable, and is easily and
quickly applied. Tho upper surface of the
Roofing is protected from the action of the
wcitber, by its covering of Ground Mica,
which is pressed iqto the water proof com
position, making a hard surface of stone,
beautiful in appearance, and a sure protec
tion against fro.
We shall also keep constantly on hand a
supply of
INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT,
which is the best coating that can bo used
for Tin Roofing. Leaky Tin Roofs can bo
readily repaired, so as to last many years,
at a trifling cost, which would in many
cases save the expense of anew Roof.
