THURSDAY MORNING June 7, 1866
SCISSORS/
—Rev. Dr. Charles Constantine Pise,
one of the most learned and eloquent
divines of the Roman Catholic Church
in America, died at Brooklyn, N. Y., On
Saturday last. He was an intimate
iriend of Henry Clay, through whose
influence he once received the appoint
ment of Chaplaincy in the United States
Senata.
—When a man shall hereafter boast
that he is an American citizen (and but
few Caucasians will henceforth make
that boast), it will not be known whether
he is a white man or a negro, Indian or
Hottentot, baboon or monkey.—Rich
mond Examiner.
—The little tax of one per cent, upon
every box of matches, netted the govern
ment §1,500,000 last year. According
to that estimate, 150,000,000 bunches
or boxes oi matches must have been
used in this country during the year, or
five buuches—equal to five hundred
matches—tor every man, woman and
child.
—A little son of Capt. Smith, of
Orleans, Mass., recently threw up, while
coughing, the porcelain leg of a doll, an
inch in length, which had b|een in the
lungs of the child for seven years. He
had been ailing all that time, and wns
regarded as a victim to consumption.'
All along the lad has said that he felt
something in bis lungs that ought to
come up. Now that it has, he feels quite
comfortable, and it is thought he will
get well.
—The New York Tribune of the 24th
ult., says that the Government has award-'
ed a contract to Henry S. Wells, of New
York, to raise the vessels in the river
and harbor of Savannah. These vessels
were sunk to obstruct the channel. The
gunboats and other vessels were scuttled
and sunk at the time the city was evac
uated. There are in all about twenty,
some of them very valuable, with .all
their guns and armament on board.
—The United States land tax now
being collected, is for the year 1861.
ASter that year the law was repealed,
and no real estate tax act has since
been passed. The tax for 1861 is one
third of one per cent.—or three dollars
thirty-three and one-third cents
on the thousand dollars, is based on the
assessment made by the State in 1860.
The law exempts from taxation home
steads of the value of five hundred
dollars and under. Hence, any one
whose land is not worth more than five
hundred dollars pays.no tax at all.
—Among the nations of the earth, the
present is a borrowing and debt-crea
ting age, ns shown by the following
figures, which gives the debt of the leading
powers: The exhibit was made by-
Mr. Gladstone in the English House of
Commons: “England, £800,000,000;
Prussia, £43,000,000; Holland )
£58,000,000; Russia, £279,000,000 ;
Austria, £316,000,000; France,
£400,000,000; Italy, £152,000,000;

t0ta1—£2,304,000,000 ; say equal to
§11,520,000,000 ; to which add debt of
the United States, $2,8000,000,000 say
a total of $14,320,000,000.

Having secured the state
RIGHT OF THE
PATENT MICA ROOFING, '
Wo are now prepared to supply it in any
quantity, or to apnlv it to Roofs.
The MICA ROOFING is adapted to build
ings of every description, and can be ap
plied to Steep or Flat Roofs, or over old
Shingle Roofs, without removing the shin
gles. We recommend its use on Factories,
Foundries, Store Houses, Cotton Sheds,
Railroad Depots and upon all buildings
where steam is used, and a Fire Proof re
quired.
/0f It costs about one-half the price of
Tin.
It is cheap, durable, and is easily and
qniekly applied. The upper surface of the
Roofing is protected from tho action of the
weather, by its covering of Ground Mica,
which is pressed into the water proof com
position, making a hard surface of stone,
beautiful in appearance, and a sure protec
tion against fire.
We shall also keep constantly on hand a
supply of
INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT,
whioh is tho best coating that can be used
for Tin Roofing. Leaky Tin Roofs can be
readily repaired, so as to last many years,
at a trilling cost, which would in many
cases save the expense of anew Roof.
