Marrying for Show—To the question iften asked of young men as to why they do ot marry, wo somotimes hear the reply : “I am not able to support a wife.” In one caso in throe, perhaps this may be so; but, is a general thing, tho true reply would be: “I am not able to support tho style in which [ think my wife ought to live.” In this, again we seo a false view of marriage—a looking to an appearance in the world, in stead of union with a loving woman for her own sake. There are very few men of in dustrious habits who cannot maintain a ■wife, if they were willing to live economi cally, and without reference to tho opinion of the world. The great evil is, they are not willing to begin life to retire together into an obscure position, and to gether work their way in tho world—he by industry in his calling, and she by dispens ing with prudence tho money that he earns. But they must stand out, and attract the at tention of others by fine houses and fine clothes. The Concert, To-Night.—Tho fare well Concert of Mr. and Miss Geary, to bo given it Concert Hall this evening, will, we hope, boMt grand success. It certainly should be. Besides the deserved reputation of the artists, the programme is a most in teresting one, tho selections being gems from the composers, and illustrative of tho songs of Ireland, Scotland, England, and America. Mr. Couturier will also give a couple of recitations—Robert Emmetts’ Speech, and Poe’s Raven, two fine selections for tho display of the readers powers. Alto gether, tho programme is an attractive one, and it is to bo hoped that Concert Hall wil; he filled with an appreciative audience. Poor Fellow. —The Local Editor of he Peoria, Ml., Transcript, who has just lecn married, thus rejoices over his change if state : “Ne more are wc doomed to room n dark attics, illumined by the faiut odor if stalo tobacco and adorned by bachelor rionds, inobriated and miserable. No, sir; re are now settled for life. Wo begin to lave an interest in the markets, are curious iver tho prico of beefsteak, are affected by I rise in soup bones and potatoes. A pic lire of life draws before us. We begin to ancy ourselves sixty or seventy years lencc, white-haired and venerable, slowly lacing to Church, loading by tho hand an nteresting family of six white-headed hoys —infant Snookcs’ —who look up to us and :alls us ‘Dad.’ With such a possible pros pect who wouldn’t get married? And then the joy of leading thoso six through the measles, whooping cough, teething, rash, tliptheria, and croup; buying them shoes, pounding them when ugly, and trotting thorn on our knee when they squall; seeing them come homo drowned trorn skating, and having thorn brought home blown up by toy cannon on tho 4th ot July, formed a picture of domestic bliss that we couldn’t resist, and so we didn’t.” It is not your dress, ladies, your ex' i pensive shawl or golden lingers that attract . the attention of men of sense; they look beyond these. It is your character they study. If y«u aro trifling and looso in your conversation, no matter if you. arc as beau tiful as an ungel, you liavc no attractions for them. It is tho loveliness of your na ture that wins, and continues to retain the affections of the heart. Young ladies sadly miss it who labor to improve their outward looks, wkilo they bestow not a thought on their minds. Fools may be won by gew gaws, and fashionable showy dresses, but the wise and substantial are never caught by traps. Let modesty bo your dress. Use pleasant and agreeablo language, aud though you may not bo courted by tho fop, the good and truly great may linger in your steps. _____ Consignees per Central Railroad, June 6.—Augusta Factory, Wyman A M, J W Bacon, W H A (Jo, Mrs A F, D S, W II TANARUS, D A Cos, M A P G, H McLean, G A Jones, FOB, Teague <6 Cos, P A L,IVS R, J S & Cos, T R A Son, J D B A Bro, Cook A M, H J Nelson, Col C K Smith, S J & Cos, A T.
