LARG EST fIrY ( IRCI LATION.
THURSDAY MORNING June 7, 186#
I'.om the N. Y. Bunday Mercury, 4th inst.
The Green Islanders.
-re can be no doubt that there are
who have contributed to the “freeing
reland,” who consider they are not
-ly to get their money’s worth. To
-jose, the following communication, by
James Girvan, wbioh we by no means en
dorse, may prove of some interest:
WHAT IS STEVENS GOING TO PO ?
What’s to be done, now that Stevens is
here?
Will he gather the funds and then disap
pear ?
Or lead on to battle, and assuming com
mand,
To conquer Old England, and free his own
land ?
He may be contented his portion to share
Os that elegant mansion ill called “Union”
Square,
But of one thing I’m certain, whatever is
done,
Will be by the mouth and not by the gun.
He ruav take a notion, like bravo Doran 8.,
To go down to Eastport with greon chiv
alry—
And dare doeds of valor, with bottle and
glass.
And think himself hero, when, all call him
“ass."
He may spout to the Fenians, their spirits
to choer,
And try to unite them now that he is here,
lie may preach of poor Ireland and hor
misery,
When ’tis all to be laid to such fellows as
he.
He may rant to the Irish till ho gets them
excited,
And boast of great deeds when thoy arc but
united,
Aye, when they are united; but when will
that be ?
Not while one drop of whiskey remains
drunk to be.
“Give me money,” ho says, “and banish all
fear,
And I’ll lead you to glory ere the end of
the year,
My name is James Stephens, and known
ne’er to fail,
You know I’m the hero who slipped out of
jail.
“Ye men who work hard from morning till
night,
Send forward your carniDgs— l wont ask
you to tight;
Ye cooks and dish-wallopers, chambermaids
too,
Give mo all of your wages, then see what
" I’ll do.
“I wont leave a Saxon on Erin’s dear soil,
Their castlos so lordly and grand I’ll de
spoil ;
I’ll make every man of you Senators, too,
Give yon plenty of money and nothing to
do.”
Now, Irishmen, listen, wherever you be
In this land of Washington, are you not
free ?
Then why not be wise, and thank Heaven
you’re so blest,
At peace with mankind, from oppression at
rest ?
