FRIDAY MORNING, JUNE 8, 1866. qTJic gailj fuss, LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION FRIDAY MORNINU June 8, 1866 SCISSORS. —Wear old clothes if you wish to give an example of steady habits. —ls your knowledge is little let not your words be many. —Some 900,000,000 gallons of petro leum go to Europe this year. —Mr. Quilp notices great mortality among the ladies, they are daily shuffling off their mortal coils, but then they put them on again. —Sinefi the 20th inst., ten steamers have arrived at New York from Europe, bringing an aggregate of six thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight passen gers. —The records of the Surgeon Gen eral’s office so far account for the deaths of 206,000 Union soldiers, with a large amount of records and documents yet to be examined. —lt is said that Dickens receives ten thousand dollars for the series of thirty readings which he is notv giving in Lon don. —Sidney Smith said that a certain person was so fond of contradicting, that lie would throw up the window in the night and contradict the watchman call ing the hour. —Within a month after the opening of the New York Inebriate Asylum, more than 1,500 applications were made by wealthy parents for the admission of their daughters. They had contracted intemperate habits at fashionable parties. —Three hundred and fifty-nine tigers, and five hundred and sixteen leopards were killed in India during the first half of the year 1865. We wonder the leo pards don’t change their spots and find safer ones. —That poor hoy, Probet is growing fat, sleeps well, and is quite comfortable. He converses rationally, says he ought to be hung eight times, as he killed eight persons. In this public con curs with him. —A Yankee being asked by a South erner why Yankees say “I guess,” while the Southern people say “I reckon,” gave the following explanation : “That a Yankee could guess as well as a Southerner could reckon.” Ice Dealers.
