®Jt |ail]i s)rrss. LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION. " AUOUHTA, OA..J SATURDAY MORNING June 8. High Bents. We alluded the other day to the sub ject of high rents, and protested against any increase, as an unwise policy and injurious to the best interests of our city. We hope that landlords will tyke the subject into serious consideration and ponder well upon it before they take any hasty and injudicious steps. It is true that taxes are heavy, but it must be borne in mind, also, that the city valuation of property is, as a general thing, far less than the actual worth. We know of one building for which several thousand dollars advance upon its assessment was refused ; and others for which one half (or more) the as sessed value is paid, or asked, in rent. These facts show that, although the rate of taxation is increased f per cent, upon the tax of last year, yet the valua tion upon which this rate is based is exceedingly low, and that rents are already exhorbitautly high. It must be borne in mind, also, that the rents of the present year, in many instances, are required to be paid in gold or its equiv alent! How unjust, then, to increase the rents for the next year, and so drive people away, thereby preventing an increase of population, and dimin ishing trade and business. We write thus as much in the interest of the landlord as in that of the persons who have to rent houses, for, after all, the interests of the whole community are, iu ft great measure, identical; and what ever increases tfy? prosperity of a city benefits the rich and the poor alike, and whatever retards the progress of a city injures the rich and poor alike. The Columbus Sun, in an article on this subject, says: We are afraid merchants and owners are going crazy about rents, iiow they can make a support and pay high prices for stores, wo cannot imagine, unless trade is much heavier than even the sanguine antici pate. We heard of one store on Broad street being rented for $3,000, abo*at three times afi much as it did before the war. This single item is a very important one, and if business is dull, which it surely will be, as the present times indicate, the cotton crop is small, the question of paying it will be a serious matter. Very few merchants, vre opine, excepting those with largo capi tals, can afford to pay more than reasonable runts, and it is not prudent policy to take a house at them. The live and let live policy should bo adopted. If not, young men,who have perilled their all and lives for the past four years, must give up business, BEWARE , OUT FOR HIM! I wish to inform the public, particularly the Retail Dealers, that I have been in formed that there is a man going around the city, selling an inferior article pf CANDY', representing that he is employed by me. Thisis to caution those who might be misled, that I have no one peddling CANDY' for me. All orders left at the store of No. 331 Broad Street will meet with prompt attention. ju7—3® E. B. PIERCE.
