Maude A Wright, of this city, W. A. <fc O. Maxwell & Co.’s Liverpool Cotton Circular, of' ; May 25th, from which we make the following quotations ; The market continues. depre«se.l and de clining. although the purchases by the trade have bren on a fair scale. Great want of confidence still exists, and it is feared the cris e, in monetary circle- es pecially, is not yet past. Arrivals have again b**en liberal* and our stock now ex ceeds a million of bales, there being besides lurgr' quantities on the way to tbii* c intry. American cotton has declined during the week about id per lb , but has been in pretty good demand, whilst for East ludia, the inquiry has been sma'l the lower grades ot this latter description being quite un saleable. The sales of Sea Klaml have been limi'ed, prices, ho wever, show little material change. Tbn toial sales of the week amount to 43,840 hales, of wnich speculators took 1,520, and exporters 6,110, leaving 36,210 for the trade. American cotton was comprised in these sales to the extent of 17.580 bales, viz., 030 on speculation, 620 export. 16,030 tra<ie. Besides this business, a .-urn 1 one was done “to arrive.” recent transactions of such being on a basis of lid. per lb. lor Middling Upland I’rices nominally as above, but very ir regular. We quote the following from the Weekly Cotton Circular of William Brvce & Cos., dated New lork, Friday Evening, June Bth. 1866; Since our last Circular was issued, bearing date of the Ist inst., the steamer Africa has arrived at Halifax with Liverpool advices ro the 2-ith ult. one week later diau those eonsid ered in our la-; circular The position of the German question still indicated war. b; t stren uous efforts were being made by ihe neutral powers to convene a European Congress, where the di p te might t»e amicably ad justed Ibe violence ol the bnaueial storm 1 i England -<e« ined to have ul si led a. hough toe Bank rates still remain* and *eu p*-i rent.. and .-eveial additional failures w- re reported T’.iere is nut little and »übt. however, that com partitive monetary ea.-e has ere this been es tablished by the en in 'll* Nlnpm nts and specie •Tom this country duringthe latter half of May. Over tw. ntv nine miihonsot gold went forward in twenty days, and our shipments still con tinue free The market of Liverpool had rub and very quiet duung the wet k under review, 46.000 lades being the amount sold, of which the trade took aim .si all. 'The receipt* had been full and the stock had run up to 1 050 000 bale*, of which more t.-.uri two fifths w* re American. On the day of the sa ling of the *• Africa” the market ei.tir* lv changed, and be came fairly active, 10 000 bale* beinu solo and prices n.Ud firmer. *.l.m*ugh no change iu quo tations was established, she prosp <t> of the large amount or specre coming from thi-; conn try. of which intimations were that hay re ceived no doubt caused this change of feeling. Monetary matiets being restored to their normal condition, and the'war question settled, speculation would probably gvize on cotton as the most dcpiess* and of the gn at staples, and force q to'ations to a point more in proportion with the provable supply in prospect. j inr own market for the we* k lias been •x --! tremely dull, tfiough a degree of firmness has been manifested even greater than we imagined ! possible. Spinners are holding aloof, awaiting quotations here to decliue to tho.-e of Liver pool; while holders are perleeily willing this course of action slioul i be pursued, know ing full well that every day is reducing still lar.lu r ihe already l.;w stocks in spinners’ bauds. Any quick demand on tho part of spun., rs would provoke a sharp auvarn e which would be assisted b> tlie movements of specula ors, who rarely opeiut*- without an export or spin ning support. The market for iotton goods has i uic«f mm at the lute advance, although it ha* been moderately quiet, us is usual at tins period of the year. 1 he present position of cotton is most pecu liar, ami the circumstances by which it is* sur . rounded are perhaps unparalleled in tiie nis lory of the staple.
