Jum- 2!k 1 sf.G SCISSORS. —“lntellectual measles’’ is anew name for poor poetry. —lt has been observed that negroes make the best members of secret socie ties, for they always keep dark. —The pressman of the Wilmington Dispatch didn’t care much where he put his foot the otlfbr day, and the con sequence was, one of the cog-wheels of the press struck the great toe of his right foot and chawed it into sausage meat. —Mr. Eldridgc, of Wisconsin, and about thirty nine other gentlemen, are the only members of Congress who have not offered amendments to the Constitu tion of the United States. They will be celebrated in the history of these days. —Little Robby, at the breakfast table one morning, broke out in a now vein “I don’t want my mother to marry again,” he said. “Why not?” was asked in some surprise. “Because,” said he, “I’ve lust one father, and I don't want the trouble of getting acquainted with another one.” —The use of the cigarette at the dinner table, by Parisian ladies, is at length beginning to he a custom. They are to be provided with costly Sevres spittoons. Upon which an English writer asks : “But what can gloss over a vulgarity ? Not even a gold spittoon set with diamonds, or the use of lace handkerchiefs at 10,000 francs each.” —A little, keen, bright-eyed girl of four years, on a visit one evening, was being helped to the knee of a gentleman friend, and on being told by her mother that she was too large u baby to hold, retorted almost immediately, accompany ing her words with an emphatic gesture: “Why, girls nineteen years old sit on Ups, and you wouldn’t call them babies, would you t” —A bill was introduced ir> the Canad'. an Parliament on Friday, by the Attor ney-General of Upper Cannon, suspend ing the Habeas Corpus Act for one year It was passed by both Houses and re ceived the Governor-General’s assent on the same day. By its provisions, per sons suspected of committing acts of hostility or of conspiring against the Government may be detained in safe custody, without bail, until the Bth of June, 1867. —An old colored preacher at Port Gibson, Mississippi, recently baptized thirty colored converts, and after the ceremony he charged them a dollar a piece. On the following Sunday he only succeeded in inducing two to pre sent themselves who were willing to pay. Becoming indignant at the parsi. moay ot his congregation, he refused to baptize the candidates for glory, saying he waru’t “agwine to slosh himself up for no two dollars.” —The Lawrenceville (111.) Globe is responsible for the following : “About seven miles north of this city a couple of our citizens called at a house for dinner. Just before they took their seats at the table, the gentleman and his wife got Into a dispute, and to end the matter, he knocked her down with his list. In a moment she took a chair and knocked him down, and directly after they took their scats at the table, and eat their dinners together, as though nothing had happened.” —Fighting seems to be tho business ‘ that is liveliest the world over, just at present. Let us see: Here are the Fenians fighting the Kanucks, there the Mexicans are fighting Max. and the Imperialists. A little farther down on the map the Peruvians are fighting the Spaniards, with Chili to help them. Then, just over the way, Paraguay is fighting Brazil and the Argentine Con federation. All Europe is getting ready for a big fight. The Russians are fight ing the Bokbarras, the Chinese are fight ing the Mongolians and the Tartars. In fact, this wicked world was some* how never so brimful of fight as it is just now. The Peace Society, we fear, is drifting sadly astern. — N. 3. Express. Cl P. Having secured the state RIGHT OF THE PATENT MICA ROOFING, Wo are now prepared to supply it in any quantity, or to appiy it to Roofs. The MICA ROOFING is adapted to build ings of every description, and can be ap plied to Steep or Flat Roofs, or over old Shingle Roofs, without removing the shin gles. We recommend its use on Factories, Foundries, Store House*-, Cotton Sheds, Railroad Depots and upon all buildings where steam is used, and a Fire Proof re quired. It costs about one-half the price of Tin. It is cheap, durable, and is easily and quiekly applied. The upper surface of the Roofing is protected from the action of tho weather, by its covering of Ground Mica, which is pressed into the water proof com position, making a hard surface of stone, beautiful in appearance, and a sure protec tion against fire. We shall also keep constantly on hand a supply of INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT, which is the best coating that can be used for Tin Roofing. Leaky Tin Roofs can be readily repaired, so as to last many years, at a trifling cost, which would in many cases save the expense of anew Roof.
