fl)c Pailn LARtiKST CWT (1K( I LATION. AUOU!S 'P A , oA • « .WEDNESDAY MORNING... Jb»« -’it. IMS Gammon. We find the following paragraph in one of onr exchanges—evidently the work of one of the Scissors (not Caesars). Mr. Stephens says that an "Irish Itepub |ie” exists in Ireland complete in all its ]iarts. That no man is allowed to unito in it who is not a sworn member of tho body. The oath rises above all social, civil and religions obligations. It is wore solemn and superior to Priest or Pope. Without disputing Mr. Stephens’ word, we respectfully beg leave to differ with him on this subject. There may be an “Irish Republic,” but we are inclined to the opinion that it is like tho great American Republic, only more so—we can't “see it.” If however, the Irish Republic does exist, “complete in all its parts,” where is it ? and wlmts’ tho use of tearing up things generally and kicking up a row on this side of the water, to establish that which already exists so “complete, in all its parts ?” If such is the tact—if a Republic can exist in so small a country as Ireland without being discovered, what a pity that we didn't understand the secret before we went to war to establish a Southern Confederacy. We could have got up a Republic of our own, had all our own officers, allowed no body to come in who hadn't “taken the oath as often as was necessary; and the United States Government would have been in as blissful ignorance of it, as John Bull is now of that Irish Republic. How much trouble, and blood, and money might have been saved, if we had only known Mr. Stevens' secret 1 But, alas! we didn’t know it; and alas 1 poor Ireland, neither does she know it. It is doubtful it Mr. Stephens really said that. Somebody must have mis understood him. Or, if he did say it, it was only to bolster up his cause, just as our Southern papers used to do when our unfortunate essay at self government was on its “last legs.” We were in the habit of bragging of our Republic, and its firm foundation, and its glorious prospects. But, alas! we waked up one morning to hear the dreadful news that our hopes had all vanished, that our Hag was trailed in the dust, and ourselves just startled from "the land where we were dreaming.” Still it was a visible Republic while it lasted. The world saw it, and admired it, but would not recognize it. With Mr. Stevens' Irish Republic, it is different. It is hid in the fastnesses of Galway, orimtnersed in the waters of some beautiful Lough, or shut up in some ancient castle of the interior, where it can never see tiie light of day, or give hope of success to its well wishers in other lands. In brief, the paragraph is all “gam mon,” but it will deceive no sensible man. The foolish invasion of Canada will open the eyes of those who have been bliuded bv the pictures of Irish Independence and Irish Nationality, and they will no longer follow the lead of those who have so wantonly and needlessly brought.!hem into trouble. Street Sail Hoads. A project is now on foot to build a Street Rail Road Augusta to the Sand Hills—a charter having been granted for this purpose bv the Legisla ture, and application for the necessary permission will be made at the next meeting of the City Council. We understand that the route of the proposed Road will be from the neigh borhood of the City Cemetery to Broad j Street, up that thoroughfare to some | point near its Western terminus, thence to the South, by the Factories and Flour Mills, to the Summerville Plank Road ; thence westwardly to the Sand Hills. The project is an important one, and of "reat interest to this community : and it is to be hoped that no obstacle will be thrown in the way of its early accomplishment. In fact, we have been informed that, if the necessary right of way can be secured, the work can be completed and the Road in run ning order in four months’ time. It will, as wc have already said, be of great importance to the community; and first, in the relief it will give our people from the exactions of grasping landlords. They can, for about the sum they would have to pay, for a year or two, in “rents in gold,” bo enabled to build comfortable suburban resi denccs, free from the heat and dust of the city, and yet within a few min utes’ ride of tho most distant portion of it. This would compel the landlords to i dismount from their high horses, and be satisfied to take their pay as other people take theirs’, in the currency of the country, without reference to fluctuations in gold. In this respect, alone, the proposed Road must effect a "reat. good. The ability to procure i-heap residences convenient to the business portion of our city, at reasona ble rates, will induce people trom abroad to come here and settle in our neigh borhood ; while the rents in the city being eventually forced down to rea sonable rates, business men will not hesitate to come into the city itsell — thus increasing our population, our business, and our general prosperity. In minor details, also, will thig road he beneficial. It will give our citizens the means of taking occasionally or fre quently, exercise and air—riding, for a few cents, out into the country, enjoying its healthy atmosphere, and returning to their homes with but little loss of time. It will also give to the merchant and j his family, who reside without the city, j the advantages of going and coming at i convenient hours. And to those of our citizens who wish to pass the Summer months on the Hill or about there, tho opportunity of doing so without neglect ing their business. These are a lew of the advantages which the proposed Road will give; and j it will be well lor our people, and for | the Council, to give tho subject their j early and earnest consideration. i ,—■ ■■—-'—.l ■. ■■ Special Notices. j MASONIC NOTICE.—A Called I Communication of SOCIAL a LODGE MO. 1 anil WE UK’S | LODGE NO.
