THURSDAY MORNING June 21, 1866 SCISSORS. —A thousand million dollars worth of gold have been dug out of the Cali fornia mines. —The man who lends an umbrella is a real philanthropist—sacrificing him self for the benefit of his species. —Wm. S. Sherwood, proprietor of the principal printing establishment in Bal timore, died on the 7th inst. —Dr. Potter, of Tionesta, Penn., one day recently drove his span of horses 103 miles and 17 rods, in 9 hours, 11 minutes, and 13 seconds, for a wager of SSOOO. —The wife of Captain Vessels, living in Aeeomac county, Virginia, gave birth, one day this week, to two children ( each having two heads, four eyes and three legs. —Rossini has written to the Pope, praying him to remove the interdict which prevents the employment of fe male voices in most of the churches in Italy. —A worthy man, when told that he was about to die, said that he was “glad of it; he was tired of putting his shoes and stockings on and off.” And this is about what life generally gets reduced to at seventy years. —Lunch parties, for ladies exclu" sively, are the fashion at San Francisco. The guests assemble at one in the after noon, in full dress, and stay until four. The refreshments are handed round on waiters. The sun is excluded and the gas lighted. —A provost marshal writes: One of the provost guards brought a colored man into the office, charged with steal ing watermelons. As he was being led away, I said to him : “I hope, Tom, that I may never see you here again.” He turned to me with a peculiar, shrewd expression, and said: “You wouldn’t ha’ seen me this time, cap'll, if de sogers hadn’t a fotch me.” —To be a woman of fashion is one of the easiest things in the world. A late writer thus describes it: “Buy every thing you don't want, and pay for nothing yon get; smile on all mankind but your husband; be happy everywhere but at home; neglect your children and nurse lap dogs; goto church every time you get anew dress.” —Robert Christian Wiley, Foreign Minister of the Ilawaiain Islands for many years, died there last fall, leaving property to the amount of $130,000 to Robert Christian Cochrane, on the con dition that the latter should assume his name. The young man, instead of com plying with the condition of the will, cut his throat with a razor. —An unsuccessful attempt was made, one night not long ago, to rob the Patent Office at Washington. The thieves ef fected an eutrance through an upper window by means of a ladder, and get ting among the cases, attempted to cut into one of them, containing a very val uable sword, said to be worth $4,000, and had so far entered upon their work as to bore four holes with an augur around one of the panels, but from some cause they became frightened and left. —A French actor, who died recently, was quite famous in the green rooms of Paris for his good sayings and good spirits. Conscious that his hours were numbered, he ordered a lead coffin. It was brought to his chamber. He called his servant, of whom he had repeatedly complained, and said to him, pointing to the empty coffin : “Jean, there is my last overcoat; I hope, you rascal, you will not feel like stealing it.” —There was an elopement in high life in Louisville recently. The Demo crat says the young lady retired at the usual hour, but before doing so tied a cord to her wrist, leaving an end of the cord hanging out of the window. At the hour appointed, the impatient lover, unterrified by the roar of heaven’s artil lery, and his ardor undamped by the torrents of rain that were falling, made his way to the abode of his charmer, seized the cord nervously, and gently pulled the belle. The signal was an swered by a hundred and forty pounds of (emale loveliuess, dropping gently into hi* extended arms. The party hurried into the carriage, and were driven rap idly to a clergyman’s aud “jined.” Ice Dealers. Ice Delivered Free TO CUSTOMERS, IN ANY PART OF the City, who will take TEN POUNDS or MORE. Having secured the state RIGHT OF THE PATENT MICA ROOFING, We are now prepared to supply it in an, quantity, or to apply it to Roofs. The MICA ROOFING is adapted to build ings of every description, and can be ap» plied to Steep or Flat Roofs, or over old Shingle Roofs, without removing the shin gles. We recommend its use on Factories, Foundries, Store Honses, Cotton Sheds, Railroad Depots and upon all bnildings where steam is ased, and a Fire Proof re quired. pH' It costs about one-half the price of Tin. It is cheep, durable, and is easily and quickly applied. The upper surface of the Roofing is protected from the action of the weather, by its oovering of Ground Miea, which is pressed into the water proof com position, making a hard surface of stone, beautiful in appearance, and a sure protec tion against fire. We shall also keep constantly on hand a supply of INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT, which is the best coating that can bo used for Tin Roofing. Leaky Tin Roofs can be readily repaired, so as to last many years, at a trifling cost, which would in many cases save the expense of anew Roof.
