Hgtrnrtr or Advbrtisino.—We again
lay hr fore the business portion of our com
munity some sow remarks on the abovo
namod subject, wbiob all will do well to
tako hoed thereof “and govern themselves
accordingly
‘•But one thing wo do know, and all
close observers will recognize the fact, and
that Is, that wbon times are flash and trade
brisk, anybody can sell goods ; bat wbon
they are dull the keen, wide-awake, rnake
overy-point-eut man reaps all tho fruit
while the slow, plodding man sits in a cor
ner and sucks his thumb, and his goods rot
on his shelves. s'
“What does the wide-awake man do in
dull timos ? Wo will tell you. He adver
tises mo A than in brisk times; and keeps
his wares, by all moons possible, before the
public, floods advertise themselves in good
times; but In dull times, they need thrown
around them the halo of printers' ink.
‘•There are always some too stingy and
,iincise to advertise; and those who do
freely, gather all the loose change.
“We lay it down a safe proposition irrefu
table, almost amounting to an axiom, that
no man ever yet lost anything by adver
tising, if he had anything to sell; and flhe
duller the times, tho greater the necessity
for using printers’ ink.
“Now the statements we have made in
this article the most astute business men
will sustain. All thoso who have amassed
immense fortunes ascribe their success to
this system.
“Would you know tho medium, the one
that will bear your messngo to more hearers
than any other? Then hold your ear
close : It is tho Daily Press. ‘A word to
the wise is sufficient.’ ”
An Old Song with New Words.—
A correspondent of the Atlanta New Era
gives tho following words to the old, but
ever popular, air of “Ben Bolt
Oh! don’t you remember the boys, Bill ltoss,
Tho boys with their noses so red,
Who drank with delight whonever they met,
And always went drunk to bed?
In the old churchyard, at tho edge of the
town,
In a corner obscure and alone,
They have gone to rest, and the gay young
sprigs
Have dropped off, one by ono.
And don’t you remember the jug, Bill Ross,
And the spring at the foot of the hill,
Where oftentimes we’ve laid in thehutsum
mer’s day,
And drank to our utmost fiil ?
The spring is filled with mud, Bill ltoss;
The wild hogs root all around;
And tho good old jug, with its whiskey so
sweet.
Lies broken and spilled on the ground.
Oh ! don’t you remember the grocery, Bill
Boss,
And the bar-keeper kind and so true,
And the little nook at the edge of The bar,
| t Where we drank all the whiskey he drevV?
Tho grocery is burned to the ground, Bill
Ross,
The bottles are cracked and dry;
And of all the boys that sproed it then,
There remains, Bill, but you and I.
Fire in Newberry, S. C.— The fol
lowing lottor gives a brief account of a re
cent fire in Newberry, S. C., in which we
regret to learn that tho office of the Herald
was entirely consumed. We tender our
symputhios in his troubles, and hope that
wo may soon bo nblc to herald his success in
re-establishing his excellent journal:
Newberry, S. C., June 19th, 1566.
Friend Ptif/hc- —We have sustained a
serious loss; the office of the Herald being
consumedT>y fire on Monday inorniog, 18th.
It originated in a cotton shed, at 3 o’clock,
and before the citizens could be aroused it
had gained much headway. A portion of
three squares was destroyed, including some
fifteen stores, and many dwellings. I have
not formed an estimate of the loss.—
Much was taken from the stores by Freed
men, who became, toward the close, a little
unruly. t
Information Wanted.— Mrs. Eliza
Tweedy left her home in Hickory Wythe,

His relations are much distressed about her.
