I lie wheat crop is an average; and the prospects for corn are good. A rattlesnake, eight feet long, was killed by the police of New Orleans, on the lltb inst., in a gutter iu the heart of the city. —A man in Caledonia, N. Y., has succeeded in raising 100,000 young trouts, for which there is a lively de mand at $.50 per thousand, to stock the neighboring ponds and streams. —There were formerly 500 Churches in Moscow, hut the Emperor Nicholas considered it too many for a respectable community, and 300 were, by his order torn down. —Dr. J. B. Irving, late of Charles ton, S. C., has been elected Secretary of the American Jockey Club, of New York, of which August Belmont is Pres ident. —A late Bremen letter announces the departure from that German port of Kitj passengers, all of whom intend making Texas their home. Other ves sels will shortly follow. —The Richmond Times says that Bishop Early, and the others who suf fered more severely by the late disaster on the Danville Rail Road, are iu a fair, way of recovery and will soon be able to be taken to their homes. —Count W'alewski, the illegitimate son of the first Napoleon, by the Polish Countess Walewski, formerly Minister of Foreign Affairs, and now President of the Imperial Senate, has been, by the favor of his Imperial cousin, created a Duke of the Empire, with the title of Colonna Walowski. lhe'oßt Jesuit prophecy of (he destruction of San Francisco by a great earthquake during the year ISG6, has caused immense consternation among divers old women of both sexes in that city. —New counterfeit fifty dollar green hveks have appeared at Nashville, Tenn. The bills are excellently engraved, ex cept that the signature of Treasurer Spinner is not as course and heavy as in the original. The paper on which they are printed is a littie thinner than the genuine. No clue has been discov ered as to who passed them. —Jefferson Davis is permitted to visit his wife daily. He leaves his room in Carroll Hall early in the morning, going directly to her apartment in one of her casemates, and remaining there till late in the evening. His health is good, and his strength daily increasing. His appetite is also represented as ex cellent. , —ln the course of the last month a novel incident occurred in the capital of San Domingo. It appears that at a ball lately given there the Governor of the city entered the saloon on horseback, and just when an enemy of his fired a revolver at him, the horse raising his head, received the contents, falling dead in the middle of the saloon. The animal was buried next day with a military band and honors. —The Fayetteville News calls the North Carolina .State Convention “an imposture,” and says: “It represents only the most disreputable set of black guards who ever reflected disgrace on the country, and is a disgrace even to the contemptuous party of Holdenites, who, although they never had any claim to gentility or decency, are even the more nastily bespattered with the filth ot dishonor, because of the connection the Convention has with them.” A Raw Orator.— An orator, in ap pealinsr to the “hone and sinew,” said : “My friends, I am proud to see around , me to-night the hardy yeomanry of the land, for I love the agricultural interests of the country; and well may I love them, fellow-citizens, for I was horn a farmer ; the happiest days of my youth were spent in the peaceful avocations ot the sou of the soil. If I may be allowed to use a figurative expression, my friends, I may say I was raised between two rows of corn.” “A pumpkin, by thunder," exclaimed an inebriated chap, just iu front, of the stage.
