The editor of the Raleigh Progress has been presented with a straw hat. There are five newspapers in the South edited by negroes. —A Paris correspondent speaks of the “fast” tendencies of some American misses in that capitol. —Brigham Young is indeed a pillar of Sal» Lake. His idea of a wife is— Lots. —A man in New Hampshire com mitted suicide six days after he was married. —Another new five cent piece has arrived in Lynchburg. Great sensa tion. —A woman too often reasons from her heart—hence two thirds of her mis takes and troubles. —Report says Mr. Belmont, of New York, has made over two millions in gold operations during the last three days. —“All flesh is grass,” sighed Sprig gles after dinner the other day, and the wretch immediately added, “Os all grasses, give me a plump grass widow.” —The season is fully commenced at Niagara. Huge tilting hoops, pretty faces, large trunks, beaver hats and diamonds are plenty. Also a waterfall 7, so. —" he St. Louis Democrat says Bcn- F. Butler cleaned up the moral physical filth of New Orleans. He certainly cleaned up the filthy lucre of the city pretty effectually. —Gored dresses are still the prevail ing style, even in thin and rich material which needs stiff lining. Organdies are not as much worn as formerly; grena dine muslin and similar goods are pre ferred . —The Atlantic cable has been com pleted and the Great Eastern left Shear ness on the 13th nit., to commence the work of connecting the Old World and the New. —At Austin, Nevada, Haup White, having separated from his wife, came and stole their little boy, sixteen months old, and started off on horseback with him, but being pursued and likely to be overtaken, he deliberately stopped and shot both the boy and himself through the head, and both died instantly. —Mrs. Van Vecbten, the stronger minded, if not the better half of a Chi cago map publisher, went to the count ing-room of a merchant of that citv the other day, and cowhided him “copious ly.” His name was Wiggins. Mrs. V. V. said Wiggins had “said things about her” in a letter. Van V. must think it comfortable to have somebody about the house capable of doing the out-door fighting of the family. Happy V. V. 1 Calves. —On the subject of “calves,” the editor of the Richmond Humming Bird is musical as follows : Domestic animals generally seem to be doing well this spring. The last few windy days have been particularly favorable for the development of “calves.” There have, perhaps, been no period in the history of this city where so many of them have been seen on the street?. They mostly go in pairs. While many of them are quite slim and gaunt this spring, others appear remarkably large and thrifty, and we are informed that, in many cases, have nearly doubled their size in a single night. To a city bred young gentleman, no branch of stock growing is so peculiarly interesting as this variety of live stock. Gor Him. —A story is related of a man who owned a building, which was situated on land belonging to the Mich igan Central Rail Road, and we mention it as a caution to bad writers. The Superintendent whose chirograph)’ is difficult to decipher, sent a short letter to Mr. S., the owner of the building, ordering him to remove it at once. But it was not done; and three months afterward the Superintendent met S., and began jo scold him for not removing his residence, as desired ; when it ap peared that the man had received the note, and not being able to make out its contents, bad supposed it to be a pass over the road, and had been riding back and forth all Summer ou the strength of it. The MICA ROOFING is adapted to build ings of every description, and can bo ap plied to Steep or Flat lloofs, or over old Shingle Roofs, without removing tho shin gles. We recommend its use on Factories, Foundries, Store Houses, Cotton Sheds, Railroad Depots and upon all buildings where steam is used, and a Fire Proof re quired. It costs about one-half the price of Tin. It is cheap, durable, and is easily and quickly applied. The upper surface of tho Roofing is protected from the action of tho weather, by its covering of Ground Mica, which is pressed into the water proof com position, making a bard surface of stone, beautiful in appearance, and a sure protec tion agfiinst fire. We shall also keep constantly on hand a supply of INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT, which is tho best coating that can be used for Tin Roofing.
