LARGEST (iITY (iIRCIILATION.
TUESDAY MORNING July 3, 1566
SCISSORS.
—The needlewomen’s exclamation—
a-liem.
—The probable location of the New
York Post-Office will be the Park.
—Alex. Dumas is to write the history
of the European war.
* —We are requested to state that the
Tilting Skirt was not invented by Theo
dore Tilton.
—The Sisters of Notre Dame, in
Philadelphia, are to erect an academy
on Ritteuhouse Square, at a cost of
$70,000.
—Twenty wagon loads—men, women
and children—of those romantic va
grants called Gipsies, passed through
Harrisburg, Pa., last week.
—At a recent meeting of the Baptists
of Jefferson City Mission, it was resolved
to drop all questions of polities and
push on with religion.
—Voltaire is slightly personal when
he says that ideas are like beards—men
get them when they grow up, and wo
men never have any.
—A few days ago, in the State of
Pennsylvania, a widower with seven
fchildren was married to a widow with
five children—neither party knowing
that the other was blessed with respon
sibilities until after the wedding. A
more badly “sold” couple it would be
difficult to find.
—Dr. Colenso has issued anew hymn
book, which, upon examination, is found
not to contain, in any part .of it, the
name of Jesus Christ. He says in a
published letter: “This was quite uninten
tional on my part, and has merely arisen
from the fact of my having rejected
hymu after hymn which contained
prayers to Christ, which I do object to
on Scriptural and Apostolical grounds.”
—The Rochester (N. H.) Courier
states that several families in that town
are making preparations to emigrate to
the Holy Land this season, under the
charge Qf Rev. Mr, Adams, and will
«*(le where.. has
already negotiated for the land. They
will leave about the 10th of July, and
take frame houses and moveable pro
perty with them.
—Here is an Oriental maxim just
translated: “If a man knows, and knows:
what he knows, he will lead a happy
life. If a man does not know, and
knows that lie does not know, he may
lead a tolerable life. Rut if a man does
not know, and does not know that he
does not know, he will lead a miserable
life I”
—A horse recently jumped over the
rail at a race course, and seriously hurt
a young man. While he was lying on
the grass, another young man uttered
a piercing cry, and exclaimed, “Mv
brother, my poor brother!” He flung
himself on the prostrate form, from
which he was at length kindly and
gently raised, while the injured man
was taken away to receive medical care.
It afterwards transpired that the affec
tionate creature who had flung himself
on the body of bis brother had done so
to steal his gold watch and chain and
portemonnaie.
—The English.girl spends more than
one-half her walking hours in physical
amusements, which tend to develop and
invigorate aud ripen the bodily powers.
She rides, walks, drives, rows upon the
water, dances, plays, sings, jumps the
rope, throws the ball, hurls the quoits,
draws the bow, and keeps up the shut
tlecock—and all this without having
pressed upon her mind that she is wast
ing her time. She does this every day
until it becomes a habit she will follow
through life. Her frame, as a natural
consequence, is larger; her muscular
system better developed; her nervous
system in better subordination; her
strength more enduring, and the whole
tone of her mind healthier.
Black and Blue.—
Says the man at the hub in a clerical tone,
A mixture of snnffie, a sneeze, and a groan—
My friend of the West,
I think you are blest
With the best country that ever was known ;
And most of the ills that you have you
would heal,
If your code called the Black Laws at once
you’d repeal.
Says the Hoosier, good sir, it may be you
are right,
For often we’ve looked to the East for our
light,
Yet of sensible men I opine there are few, '
IVho wouldn’t prefer tho Black Laws to tho
blue.

LOOK TO YOUR ROOFS. ~
Having secured the state
RIGHT OF THE
PATENT MICA ROOFING,
We jire, now prepared to suppjy it in any
quantity, or to appiv it to Roofs.
The MICA ROOFING is adapted to build
ings of every description, and can be ap
plied to Steep or Flat Roofs, or over old
Shingle Roofs, without removing the shin
gles. We recommend its use on Factories,
Foundries, Store Houses, Cotton Sheds,
•Railroad Depots and upon all buildings
where steam is used, and a Fire Proof re
quired.
j?®* It costs about one-half the price of
Tin.
It is cheap, durable, and is easily and
quiekly applied. Tho upper surface of the
Roofing is protected from the action of the
weather, by its covering of Ground Mica,
which is pressed into the water proof com
position, making a hard surface of stone,
beautiful in appearance, and a sure protec
tion against fire.’
We shall also keep constantly on hand a
supply of
INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT,
which is tho best coating that can be used
for Tin Roofing. Leaky Tin Roofs can be
readily repaired, so as to last many years,
at a trifling cost, which would in many
cases s°ve the expense of anew Roof.
Full directions for applying, and prices,
sent on application.
