tfjjr Bails VrfSS LAIIGEST CITY CIRCULATION. AUftUSTA, & A TUESDAY MORNING July *• 1884 The Gold Market. Ottr readers of ull classes, we are sat isfied, look every morning with some anxiety at the New York gold quota- Ileus, ill order to see the fluctuations of this great standard of value, and to make up their minds whether it will soon be up to 200, dr fall to 125. As the price of every maids food is to be, in a measure, regulated by this rise or fall, it is quite natural that all should feel some interest in regard "to so vital a matter. The New York Tribune, in no ticing the fact, which, perhaps, is with out precedent in commercial history, that we had exported some forty mil lions in gold in about six weeks, says that “all business seems to be chaos,” and that prudent merchants find it hard to buy at a safe commission, or sell at a safe profit. The writer advocates a tariff on the exportation of specie to put a stop to the immense golden drafts which are now being sent to Europe. The following table, which we copy from a New York paper, gives the specie ex ports for the past week ; also, from the Ist of January to the 23d of the present month, and for the same period for a se ries of years. It will be found of much interest: Juno 20—steamer Malta, Liverpool— American Gold $201,100 June 20—steamer Eagle, Havana— American Gold 2,600 June 23—steamer Hausa, Bremen— American Gold 14,445 For Southampton— American Gold 122,683 Silver bars 573,989 Gold bars 131,069 Foreign Silver 62,500 American Silver 3,900 For Bremen — Foreign Silver 2,500 June 22 —st’amer City of Paris, Liverpool— American Gold 127,200 June 23—steamer Borussia, Hamburg— American Gold 36,500 Gold bars 13,800 Silver Coin 116,000 Total for the week $1,408,264 Previously reported 43,534,278 Total since .Tan. 1, 1866 $41,942,564 Same time in 1865 17,585,627 S une time in 1864 28,708,129 S une time in 1563 20,453,187 Same time in 1862 24,900,351 Same time in IS6I 3,247,368 Same time in 1860 20,060,745 Same time in 1859 33,051,478 Same time in ISSB 12,146,039 Same time in 1857 22,076,402 Same time in 1856 12,762,864 Same time in 1855 Same time in 1854 14,795,829 Same time in 1853 8,057,007 Same time in 1552 11,824,021 —The Times, published at Leeds, England, says that nitrate of silver (lunar caustic) rubbed into a wound made by the teeth of a mad dog, will euro hydrophobia, and prevent all inju rious consequences from the wound. The remedy should he applied as soon after the accident as possible, as the virus is disseminated through the sys tem in about six weeks, and then all the hope is gone. Dr. Youatt, the well known veterinary surgeon, says he has been bitten eight or ten times, and has always cured himself by this means. —A strange spectacle was recently presented in r. Prussian town when the levies of troops were about starting. The train was ready but the wives of the soldigrs opposed its departure, throwing themselves in their despair on the rails in front of the locomotive. Re course to violence could not be em ployed. What was to be done ? The station master proposed to the women to accompany their husbands, but iu separate carriages. The poor creatures consented ; but when the train started, the carriages with the women did not move. The station master had *hem detached, but wisely took care to get away before the discovery was made. The New York Herald of Tuesday says : “It was reported yesterday that two prominent members of the Union Club of this city had left town for the purpose of engaging in a deadly conflict according to the thirty-nine articles of the code of honor. The affair has been kept a profound secret, and no more is known than thatthe two reported principals are absont from their place of business and homes.” Where upon, the Richmond Timet says: “It will turn out, wo predict, that tlieso men have not gone to fight any duel, but have run off with somebody’s money." —Organdies, mull muslins, bareges, mozambiques, and piques are all the rage, and they are—for the Summer— certainly the prettiest dresses in the world. These goods have, too, the one great advantage over all other goods— that of cheapness. —“Do you enjoy going to church now?” asked a lady of Mrs.Partington. “Law me, I do,” replied Mrs. P. “No thing does me more good than to get up every Sunday morning, and go to church aud hear a populous minister dispense with the gospel.” Special Notices.
