Papbb Collars.—Our over the way eotemporary, a few dayi ago, pitched Into the paper oollart; and now we have another bombardment of them from another eouroe. The New York correspondent of tho Charle ston Aum aayi: “Let all beware of paper oollura—at leaet such of them as are beau tifully polished and glued. It has been positively ascertained that this polish or gloss is given to the collar by submitting the paper to a chemical preparation in which arsenic ii ono of the chief ingredi ents. Next, that after wearing them for three years, the akin in the back part of the neck beoomes impregnated with the prison, and breaks out into horrible sore* and carbuncles. There have been hundreds of instanoes here where this effect has been produced; wherefore, those who are wise would do well to take warning in time. It were simply ridiculous for any one to con tend that he has worn these collars for a year or two without any such ill-effoot be ing produced, fur it has been oalcnlated and demonstrated that it takes at least three years for tbo poison to do its work. This precaution, however, need only be adopted with tho glossed collars. All that do not wear this polish—such as wo obsorvo on some visiting cards which go through the same profess—are harmless, and may be worn with impunity. I have heard of a physician hero who has sixteen patients afiltoted with terrible sores and carbuncles— all of them had tho carbuncles on the back of tho neck, and all have been wearing these paper collars for threo years past. I have dwelt thus on the subject, as I mean to give a timely and important warning to your readers.” Messrs. Maude & Wkiuiit have fa vored us with W. A. <fc G. Maxwell’s Liver pool Weekly Cotton Circular, from which we make the following extracts : “Thcro has been a fair steady trade demand this week, which, having been freely met, prices have shown but little fluctuation, quotations, however, marking on tbo whole a fractional advance on those of this day last week. Tho Import has been large, especially of American, and the total stock is thereby swelled to the very heavy figure of ono mil* lion and forty thousand bales. High rotes of discount continue to rule, and this, added to tbo almost certainty of an immediate German war, confines speculation to narrow limits. "The total sales of the week amount to 71,710balcs, vix., 4,710 to speeulators, 10,400 to exporters, and 56,000 to the trade. American is comprised in tho above to the relative extents of 2,290, 1,310, and 19,120 — in all 22,720 bales. Transactions “to ar rive” have been very few, but have been realising slightly higher prices than our quotations (or Cotton on spot. “June 16th, Noon.—Telegraphic an nouncements are to band of the actual be ginning of hostilities iu Germany, which neutralize the effect of the favorable Ameri can advices per Cuba. A moderate business to-day at about above quotations.” Papers. —We received on Sunday and yesterday, a large supply of newspa pers, enough to supply our journal lor a day or two ; but we wont inflict so much on our readers (it a time. They, uo doubt, prefer it in more broken doses. A great number of these papers came by the courtesy of the Southern Express, an institution of the country, which grows in popularity as it extends its arteries through the Union. The “Gladiateur” is the new style of apology for a hat, at present all tbo rage among the ladies. It was originated by tho lorettes of Paris. It consists of about fifty cents worth of braid, woven into tho shape of a puckered pancake, and orna mented with vegetable devices, of the mush room order. Price ten dollars. Law Card. —The attention of readers is directed to the law card of G. A. Snead, Esq. He will practice in the various Courts, and we commend him to the patronage of parties needing the services of a lawyer. Mr. Snead will be found at his office, over Baker & Caswell’s, on Broad Street. It Has Arrived. —It has arrived. It weighs 230 pounds. It is at the Office Saloon. It will be served up and out to-day. It will be served up in the shape of soup at Lunch. It will be served up in steaks for families. It is a Turtlo. A Moral General—An exchange says: “The charge against Gen. Kilpatrick, U. S. Minister to Chili, is that of having intro duced an abandoned woman into respecta ble families in Chili.” This is the same Kilpatrick that raided through Georgia. He may be some on gen eralship, but not much on general morality. Exit Kilpatrick. Soldier Shot. John Brown, a Drummer of the 16th U. S. Infantry, was accidentally shot on Sunday night last, by a Corporal. The ball took effect in Brown’s thigh and caused his death. By reference to our special notice column it will be seen that a dividend of five per cent, has been declared by the Augusta Factory, and will be paid on de mand. Stockholders will take notice. Social Lodge meets to-night. See advertisement. The Lover.—The lover is a monarch; his heart la the world; he stalks a Colossus with the little affairs of the universe—the wars and politics playing at bo-peep abont his legs. With a sigh in his ear, just fresh and palpitating from the bosern of love, and its fellow half strangled in the throat os it leaps to respond, your lover has neither sense nor comprehension for the dull actualities-that other men bruise their patience against. To him, past and pres ent, loss and profit, good and ill, are merged into one sensation; a kiss blots out the universe, and tbe rapturous ecstacy that tingles in his blood is light, day, respira tion—the sum of everything which makes up existence. Notice.—The connection of the un dersigned with the Chronicle & Sentinel ceases from this date. Martin V. Calvin. Augusta, Ga., July Ist, 1366. We find the above card in the Chronicle <k Sentinel of Sunday morning. Mr. Cal vin has, for some time, been connected with the editorial department of the Chronicle <t- Sentinel as Associate News and Local Edi tor, and has done good service, and wo re gret his descent from tho tripod. He is a young man of talent and industry, and we hope that he may soon have tho editorial harness on his back again. The Chronicle & Sentinel.—This venerable journal put on the airs of a youth Sunday morning, by coming, out in anew and haudsomo dress of typo. We congrat ulate our cotemporary on this evidence of its prosperity, and hope that the evidence may continue to increase as time progresses. Hamrurg. —We learn from the Chron icle &• Sentinel, of Sunday morning, that Mr. F. Bowers was unanimously elected Clerk of Council, and Mr. P. Sharpton. Town Marshal of Hamburg, S, C., on the 29th of June last. Recorder’s Court.—There was but one ease in this Court yesterday—a freed tnan charged with using very indecent lan guage iu the public streets, in violation of tho 10th section. Ho was lined $lO, or fif teen days’ work on the streots. The Fouth.—We understand that the bar-rooms are requested to close on the Fourth; and fire-works will be prohibited, as endangering tho City from tho use of lire. River News.— Eclipse arrived Sun day and departed yesterday. Water mark, five feet. —Bayard Taylor is translating “Fret hiof’s Saga,” for early publication. The Austrians have been defeated near Frankfort. —A gentleman, lately boasting of the neatness and regularity of his wife, said: “If I get up iu the night, pitch dark, I find my clothes, down to my gloveS, all in their proper places. I was up this morning before daylight,” he continued, putting his hand into his pocket for his handkerchief, and here he pulled out his wife’s nightcap. —The daughter of a wealthy man in Jersey City, last week, made prepara tions to elope, and threw her dresses out of the windaw where her “young man” stood in waiting to carry them off. No sooner had he seized them, however, than an officer seized him, and instead of sleeping in a bridal bed, he occupied quarters in a public institution. —Three photographers of Warsaw have been sentenced to a fine of ono hundred rubles each for having produced portraits of . Komissaroff, the peasant who saved the Emperor’s life, the shadow of which depicted the head of an ass. —“I’ll bet a sheep,” said old Meredith to his better half, “that our son Otlio is goin’ crazy; for he’s grinnin’ at the barn, and he’s grinnin’ at himself ivhere ever he goes.” “Shaw 1 old man,” said his wife, “you don’t know nothin’. The critter’s got a love letter.” —Mr. Dean Richmond obeyed the law against free passes, and sold a tram to an editor’s convention recently for one dollar. —On Good Friday, in a town in North Wales, an elderly minister, with a bald pate, judiciously selected for his text 1 “My sins are greater ip number thau the hairs on my head !” LOST.
