£l)f Bails LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION. Augusta, 0a..: FIUDAY MOKNING >uly 6. **• THE FOURTH OF JULY. THE DAY. The 90th anniversary of the Declara tion of Independence was observed in this city principally by the Freed men, who seemed to enjoy themselves greatly. The Day was clear ar.d pleasant in the shade, though rather warm in the sun shine. But the colored people did not mind the latter; they turned out in large numbers, aud carried out their programme fully. THE ZOUAVES. A noticeable feature of the day and of the procession was the Colored Zou aves, their uniforms consisting of blue jackets aud red pants, in the Zouave style. They bore with them a hand some United States flag. They were escorted to the place of general rendez vous by the Society of Colored V> utters, who were preceded by a banner bearing the inscription “Waiters’ Society, with the device ot a knife and fork. As these passed down Greene street, they stopped in front of the City Hall, and proposed three cheers tor the City au thorities which were given with a hearty good will. THE PROCESSION. The several organizations which took part in the proceedings of the day met on Greene street, in front of the Hough ton Institute, where the line was formed. Previous to marching, the Marshal of the Day announced that the various Cap tains would be held responsible tor the good conduct of the men under their command. About 10 o’clock, the procession hav ing been duly formed, the Colored Dray men, mounted, forming the head of the column, followed by the Zouaves, the Waiters’ Society, and other organiza tions, bearing flags and banners, and with a band of tiekl music, proceeded up Greene street to Centre, up Centre to Broad, up Broad to Kolloek, down Kollock to Greene, down Greene to El bert, down Elbert to the Parade Ground where a stand was provided for the speakers, and where a large crowd of colored people had assembled to take part in the festivities of the day. MORE CHEERING. As the procession passed the residence of the Mayor, three cheers were given for Hon. James T. Gardiner. As it passed the City Hall, throe more were given for the civil authorities as a marching salute. And, also, when it arrived at the Parade Ground, three cheers were given lor the Governor of the State, three for His Honor the Mayor, and three for the City Council. THE SPEECHES. Several speeches were made, one by Gcu. Tillson, and others by colored men, all of which were mild and conciliatory, and some ot them full of good advice to the audience. INCIDENTS. . Previous to the Fourth, all of the Societies designing to celebrate the day sent to the Mayor and requested his permission to do so, and, aiso. u.-king to have a Police force sent with the pro cession to preserve order; all of which was, of course, cheerfully granted, and good order was preserved. Indeed, the day passed off very quietly and credita bly to all concerned, and the good feel ing exhibited towards the civil author! ties, by the frequent cheering which they received, and the conciliatory tone of the speeches delivered, were pecu liarly gratifying aud commendable. At the Parade Ground, one man, a mem ber ot the Zouaves, was accidentally shot in the heal, but not dangerously wounded. The ice cream, fruit and cake dealers, made a good thing of the day, aud were on the ground in goodly force. Altogether, the colored citizens had a fine time generally, and deserve credit for the manner in which they deported themselves and the good order which they observed. THE NATIONAL SALUTE. At noon a national salute of thirty five guns was fired on Telfair Street, in front of the Barracks. The firing was not very well done, owing, perhaps, to the fact that the guns having been for merly the property of the Confederate Government, were rather rebellious yet, not having been properly reconstructed and harmonized. • THE FANTASTIC®. In the afternoon, two or three bands of colored fantastics, amused themselves and a motley crowd of colored children, by parading on Broad aud some of the other Streets, dressed in grotesque cos tumes. FIRE WORKS. In the evening a great number of sky rockets were discharged foorn the balcony of the Academy Barracks, on Telfair Street, and in some portions of the city a lew fire works were displayed. CONCLUSION. Altogether the day passed off very agreeably ; although not without some disagreenble results. A United States soldier got into a qunrrel on Broad Street, and in the scuffle which ensued was severely stabbed. And a few par ties were arrested for disorderly con duct ; lint apart from these, general good order was observed and enforced. —lt is related that the Emperor Napoleon, when paying a visit recently to the works of the Universal Exhibition, approached a group of laborers, and addressing them in a familiar tone, said that they must not believe in the rumors of war; that he himself sincerely wished for peace; and that the international fete of 1867 should noton any account be postponed. —The Montgomery Mail calls the drunken loafers in that city “portable groceries.” Special Notices.
