They ean’t bear it. They regard it as an insult. They wear their feathers, furbelows and frills merely to gratify their mammas, that’s all. —There are, on the average, four or five thousand prosperous Americans temporarily or permanently residing in England. —The biggest tree yet discovered in California is fifty two feet five inches in diameter, or over one hundred and fifty feet in circumference. Only the stump is left. —The watermelon crop in Fltfrida was never better than this season. The melons are large, (air and fine, and com mand remunerative figures. —The New Jersey negroes have em ployed General Benjamin F. Butler to claim for them the right to vote iu that State. —lt is considered important enough to publish in Paris that the Empress of the French wears spurs when riding. Her horse is trained to their use. —The doorkeeper of the House of Commons was puzzled as to the sex of the Chinese ambassadors, and doubtful as to admitting them. —John A. Heyl, a German, of Boston, has invented anew method of lighting the street lamps with electricity, by means of which every lamp in the city can be lighted simultaneously or singly, at the pleasure of the operator. -An association of workmen in Lan cashire, England, has a'dopleu a’g' it/ motto : “Eight hours’ work, eight hours’ play, eight hours’ sleep, aud eight shill ings a day.” —Under the head of scientific intelli gence, Punch says at the next meeting of the Horticultural Society a paper will be read “On the Coolness of the Cu cumber.” —Hon. Hannibal Hamlin, who has been laid up with rheumatism in Bangor, has recovered sufficient strength to draw his salary m Boston. —A Frenchman who proposed estab lishing a school having heard that a high school would be more respectably patronized, took rooms iu the garret of a four-story house. —The annual income of Wendell Phillips is sixty thousand dollars. The Cleveland Plainctcaler remarks that the statement should go with it, which will hardly he denied, that Phillips inherited his wealth from ancestors who accumu lated immense fortunes by the mauufae tore of and traffic iu Now England rum, and by the African slave trade. —We hear of a wonderful “growing spell” out of town. Corn shoots up with a vigor that can be seen in the growing. Vines run along the ground almost as fast as little dogs, and nature is in a sort of jubilee condition. The early fruits will rapidly mature under “this sun of ours,” whatever discomfort comes of it to imperilled humanity. —Tho Boston Journal says that a gentleman of that city who returned a very large income for 1865, has, since the publication of the fact, received six to twenty letters from all parts of the country, asking loans of sums, vary ing from ten dollars to fifty thousand dollars.
