Mjfiy&aJ&su City Printer—Offioial Paper LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION. AUGUSTA, C* A*. I THURSDAY MORNING Jnly I#, 1860 v Tot* Fair:—The Press of thU city refer* to thwNew York Timufor rentimenta . la reference to th* Philadelphia Conven tion, afcioh he think* »r* not enlonlated to the moremont to Southern favor. jfae Prtt » should hear in mind that the rj\ mu ha* recanted it* partiality to the Convention 4*ea*a* men are invited to *eat« in it without reference to antecedent*. That lurely ought not to be any objection to the Convention in thi* latitudo. —Chronicle A Sentinel, Jnly 18. We really thought we “toted fait” in the artiol* referred to. We gave the Timtv article a* we found it, without, comment, and lubjoined the circular of the National Union Committee, in advance or it* publi cation in the Ckron\cle it Sentinel. If that ian’t “toting fair,” neighbor, wo don’t know what “toting fair” i«. We need only add that we deaign no faotioua opposition to the proposed Convention. We are sick and tired of politics; we have but little faith in politicians, and, therefore, preferred to soo the South keep aloof from all “tangling alliances,” particularly In what seemed to us to be an effort toorganize anew party, and that only a wing of the Black Republi can party, ererj wing of which we loathe and despise. But it ia ovident that tho Convention will be hold, and that tho South ern States Intend to be represented in it We deem it, therefore, unnecessary to say more upon the subject. We have expressed our viows steely and fully upon people decide differently, we abide the re sult cheerfully, and hope that their decision may result only in good to our beloved section. Georgia wii.u Send Delegates.—lt is now past doubt, says the Rome (Ga.) Courier, as to whether Georgia will send Delegates to the National Union Convention in Philadelphia. Conventions have been called for most of the Congressional Dis trusts. For tho 7tb, it is to bo at Atlanta July 28th; for the 4th, at Macon, July 25tb. Hon. John J. Gresham, Hon. Thos. Harde man, and Gen. Wm. Holt, arc delegates from Bibb county. For the 6th, at Augusta, on the 28th; for the 2d, at Aroerieus,«on August Ist ; and for tho 3d, at La Grange, August Ist. It is probable that Conven tions hare also been called in tho Ist and sth Districts also, but wo have not yet seen notices of them. The Missouri Test-Oath —Arrest or Nuns at Cape Girardeau for Fail ure to Take the Oath. —We learn that considerable excitement was brought about at Cape Girardeau by the repeti" tion of an arrest of some of the Sisters of Charity, or nuns, attached as teachers to the convent of a Catholic Academy at that point, for their not taking the oath prescribed by the new Cons itution. The excitemeut is reported to have been so great against this outrage, perpe trated in the name of “law” against a highly meritorious, benevolent and re ligious order—Christian, self-sacrificing women at that—that those who had them in charge as malefactors were com* pelted to desist in the discharge of a “Radical duty,” at war with every deli cate and decorous instinct we habitually practice toward the sex. The matter was compromised by “these offenders against the new Constitution” giving bond for their appearance at the “next Circuit Court of Cape Girardeau county,” for their appearance to answer to the criminality of the offence oi acting in the capacity of teachers without taking the convention oath. Is there any other State in this country, even under Radi cal rule, the law of which subjects re ligious women and men to the indigni ties of an arrest and imprisonment, in the discharge of their religious and bu siness avocations ? We believe not; and yet we learn from Mr. Drake, as the avowed exponent of Radical intent in this State, that not one iota of this ob noxious law is to be repealed ; that the safety of the Radical party admits of no such reform. — City of Kansas Adver tiser, July 7. Admission of an American to the English Bar.— lt has already been mentioned that the Hon. Judah P. Ben jamin, who was the late Confederate Secretary of State, has been admitted to the English bar as a “barrister.” Mr. Benjamin was, for many years, a distinguished lawyer at New Orleans, with an extensive practice in the United States Supreme Court. The Picayune , speaking of a letter received trom him by his relatives in New Orleans, re marks : He was called to the bar by the benchers of Lincoln’s Inn, London, and as a special favor dispensed from the several long terms of reading aud study which are prescribed, and with very rare exceptions demanded of all candidate* for the wig and gown under tho ancient rules of the Courts of Great Britain. Mr. Benjamin'* position at the bar is that of a barrister. His duties relate only to the conduct and argument of suit* which are placed in his bands by attorneys. He only knows such clients us are brought to him by attorneys. Ho can receive no business directly from suitors or olaimauts, but it must all come to him through attorney*. Hn eannot oron hold an InUrviow with olienU WEMPtH the prasofcch of the attorney*. Th. Utter g*t up the case*, make up th# brief* and pre pare the tastiinony, and then-hand th# brief orer to the barrister whom* they mny •elect, accompanying tho Mine ahray* with a .uitable retainer. All that tho barrister can do when applied to direotly by partie* haring suit* 1* to refer them to an attorney. A Liberal Donation. —We find the following In a late l*«ue of the Richmond Diepntch. It needs no comment from n*: Liberal Donation—Oakwood Memo rial Association. —Som* kind friend* in Auguata, Ga., havo sent Mr*. A. R. Court ney, Secretary of this Assooiatlon, the sum of eix hundred and ten Hollare. The name* of the donor* are concealed, the draft being unaccompanied by any letter or other elue to their identity. The gift i» not less welcome. It will greatly cheer the hearts of the ladies, and encourage them in their labor of love. Augusta has done well. When one city of the impoverished suffering Sonth, with so many calls pressibg from evory direction upon the benevolent, lays sueh an offering upon the graves of the dead, we have an evidence of oommon sympathies in thi* cause, and liberality of mind, whieh is truly refreshing. Such tokens of kindness and fellow-feeling betweon different parts of the eountry must exert a happy influence in strengthening those bond* Os amity and concord which should exist between the States in ail matters affecting the general welfare.
