SLAtBT IN BATTLE.
BY MARGARXT J. PRESTON-
Break my heart and ease this fkln
Cease to throb, thou tortured brain J
Let me die, since ho is slain —
Slain in battik!
Blessed brow, that loved to test
Its dear whiteness on thy breast—
Gory was the grass it prast—
Slain in battle!
Oh that still and stately form—
Never more will it he Warm ;
Chilled beneath that iron storm,
Slain in battle!
Not a pillow for his head,
Not a hand to smooth his bed,
Not one tender parting said —
Slain in battle !
Straightway from that bloody sod,
IV he re the trampling borsemen trod—
Lifted to the arms of God—
Slain in battle !
Not my love to come between,
With its interposing screen —
Naught of earth to intervene;
Slain in battle !
Snatched the purple billows o’er,
Through the fiendish rage and roar,
To the far and peaceful shore;
Slain in battle !
Tunc rfewifW®—thiis I pray—
What else left for me to say,
Since my life is rest away ?
Slain in battle !
Let roe die,j>h God !—the dart
Hankies deep within my heart —
Hope and joy and peaco depart —
Slain in battle !

A CERTAIN CURE

■Pdf# PERRY DAVIS’
-VEGETABLE
[Pain JKiller,
Sr; Louis, Mo., June 14, 1849.
Mr. A T. Kooduard, Agent of Perry Davie’
Pain Killer :
Dear Sir : I feel it a duty I owe to the
public, to make known tho value of Perry
Davis’ Pain Killer, and my experience in
using it for some of the complaints for
which it is highly recommended. In April
last, on your recommendation, I purchased
a one dollar bottle of yon for pains with
which I have long been afflicted, and made
use of it on iny trip down to New Orleans,
with the most gratifying and beneficial
effects. On my return to this city, the
Cholera made its appearance among some
of my passengers. I made use of the Pain
Killor, having no other remedy on board,
and, to my surpriso and gratification, found
it gave immediate relief! On my arrival
in St. Louis, I called on yon and got four
large bottles, and stated to you my confi
dence in it as an infallible Cholera remedy,
and remarking to you that I wanted no
other Cholera remedy on my boat. I made
use of tho four bottles on my trip to Now
Orleans and back, for Cholera and some
other complaints for which it is recom
mended, and met with the most astonishing
success ; when I ordered from you six more
one dollar bottles. Since then I have
made two more trips to New Orleans and
back; an and on my previous trip up I had
more than
oarnnn CAcee or chuoeka
on board, when the PAIN KILLER was
immediately used with the most astonishing
results. In ail cases where it was need in
time, it gave relief in a very short time;
and I can, with confidence, say to the pub
lic, that in all the first stages of Cholera,
when taken in time, it is, in my opinion, an
infallible remedy! aDd after a fair trial
with it for several weeks, and lor four
trips to New Orleans and backhand using
it for Cholera and other complaints for
whioh it is recommended, no consideration
whatover would induce me to leave port
without a good supply—believing it to be a
medicine that no officer of a boat or any
family would be without a single day after
using one bottle; believing it to be the
most Valuable family medicine known to
the world for all the different complaints
for whioh it is recommended.
P. S.—Please send me six large bottles
for this trip.
J. M. Broadwell,
Captain Steamer Adriatic.
I most cordially unite with Capt. Broad
well in recommending Perry Davis’s Pain
Killer to the public, having myself been
severely attacked with tho Cholera, and
found relief in a few hours by using the
Pain Killer, and have myself administered
it to more than fifty persons attacked with
the Cholera, and when used in time, a cure
was effected in a few hours, and tako pleas
ure in recommendiug it to the public as an
invaluable medicine, that no individual
should bo without a single hour.
J. F. Boefingtox,
Clork Steamer Adriatic.
Davis’ Pain Killer.—ln to-day’s Union
will be found an advertisement of this cele
brated remedy. The certificates appended
from the captain and clerk of the steamer
Atlantic we know to be genuine, and
founded on facts, as they verbally stated in
our office the substance of what they pub
lish. — St. Louis Union.
