Rfeuatiun. Address “ Q," Daily
Ms. WibUM K. Bsucie-Tli* re
mstnif of ths lets Hr. WillUm H. Jlsrnss
nrriv.d yesterday afternoon by the South
tiarolipa traia, and was roceived and es
corted to the Csmatery by a number of the
relatives and ftianda of the docoosod.
Hr. Barnes held the position of Orderly
Bargaant In the Sixth Georgia lleserres.
and having bean taken siok and lent to
hospital during Sherman’s march through
this Stetp* was lost sight of, he having boon
ordered first to Cheraw, and afterwards to
Sumter, S. C., ut which latter place he died
on ‘or about the 18th of Meroh, 18#5. ,
The scene of his death and place of in
terment was ascertained by the merest Oc
cident, In a conversation with the lamcnted’s
friends and Rev. Dr. Winkler, as to tho
missing, it having happened that the latter
gentleman had attended Mr. Barnes in hia
last hours.
William E. Barnes was one of our most
energetic citiiens, and was distinguished
alike for his seal and honesty.
A Fact fob History.— ln his ud
drese at Norfolk, a short time since, upon
rebuilding the churches of the South, ex-
Goveruor Wise stated that “more than
twelve hundred churches had been utterly
destroyed in the Southern States during the
war/’ in addition to the vast number that
bad been “polluted, defiled, defaced and
impaired.**
Think of it! Says the Richmond li’Aiy
There was in nine cases out of ten, more
likely In nineteen cases out of twenty, not a
particle of necessity, military or otherwise,
fur this. It wns sheer wantonness and dia
bolism. Yet the men who did it havo keen
hold up to the world by those who hnumled
them on from the pulpit and presses es the
North, as Christian warriors—us a Biblo
reading and God-fearing race—its the lead
ers and exemplars of the civilization of the
century —as the champions of a policy
“founded on great moral ideas,” with end
less balderdash of that kind. Twelve hun
dred churches destroyed ! Lot tho fact go
into history as an enduring ovidcnce of the
spirit that actnnted the hordes against
which, for firesides and altars, we con
tended.
To bb Paid.— A bill has been offered
in Congress (with a probability of its boing
passed) to pay the Collectors of Internal
Revenue who were not able to take the test
oath.
This is but just, for it would be a shame
that the country should accept the services
of any class of citizens and then refuse to
give them What thoy have earned. It is to
be hoped that Postmasters, who have la
bored so long and well for the public good,
will also receive proper remuneration for
their services.
Most of those in office were compelled to
seek it in order to the support of themselves
and families, and it is but just that they
should be promptly paid and paid in full.
Personelle of the Delegations. —
The Washington (D. C.) National Intclli
yenccr thinks the Courention party at the
.South will “send such men as, by tluir an
tecedenti, will most fully give the stamp of
nationally to the Convention;” and that
“they cannot hare too much regard to the
personelle of their delegations.”
The organ of the Convention movers
says:
“The South should not send men who
have made themsolves obnoxious by promi
noace in secession. The best thing it oan
do is to put forward as its political lcadors
the men who are fitting representatives of
the existing Union sentiment es that sec
tion."
Verily the oracles of to-day are as am
biguous as their prototypes of old.
The Cholera on Tybee.—The Mer
cantile Index say tho cholera still holds
sway on Tybee Island, though no cases
have yet oecurrod among the passengers on
the San Salvador. There are not many new
cases reported on the Island, but this may
be because there are only eighty-six of those
landed left, there having been forty deaths
and three hundred dosertions.
Many dead bodies havo been found on the
marßbes intermediate between Tybee and
the city. It is feared that there are a num
bef of doserters in Savannah. The police
are constantly on the alert for the arrest of
them.
The Wheat Crops. —We are now
pretty well posted from all sections of the
country, says the Macon Telegraph, in re
gard to tho wheat crop just harvested, and
the conclusion is that while it falls short of
an average of other years, as regards quan
tity, it is far in advance of the crops for
some years past, and of excellent quality.
There is an abundance for domestio demand,
and a good surplus for exportation. The
currency being equal, flour ought to and will
be considerably ebeaper.
How to Preserve is said
that if milk be introduced into bottles, put
into a pan with odd Water and gradually
raised to a boiling point, and after being al
lowed to cool, be taken out, ccrked and set
in a cool place, it may be preserved perfect
ly sweet for upwards of half a year. The
reason is said to bo that heat deprives the
sugar of ita power of changing into lactic
acid.
New Firm.—We take pleasure in call
ing attention to the ahnounoement made in
another column by our enterprising young
friends, Messrs. Baker <fc Taliaferro, who
afe holding forth at the old stand of Mr.
It. B. Willis, lately deceased.
Attention is directed to the anction
sale of Day, Russell 4 Benjamid, which
takes place this morning- They will dis
pose of a great variety of goods.
Inferior Court. —Elizabeth Martin,
a white woman, was tried before this Court,
yesterday morning, for larceny, and ordered
te be sent to the Lunatic Asylum at Mii
ledgoville.
