Goixo Noutii to have the Twist Taken Out.— The Charleston Africa of August 6th says: For more than a year wu have been seeing blistered and twisted railroad irau passing through onr city on its way to the North. When we hoard of the tearing up of the roads at the time of the inarch of Sherman’s army through the Stute, we thought the boys tore up a rail here and there, and rendered it useless by twisting it round a telegraph pole. But we now find that the work was much more complete. Tho 11 boys ” made good use of their time, and laid out a splendid business for the “protected' 1 in n men of Penn sylvania. We have often wondered if Gen. Sherman owns any iron stock. Trains still coine down every day loaded with this twisted iron ; aud weary mules draw the rattling load through ourstreets and down to the wharves, eliciting tho admiration of beholders at the wonder ful industry of the Grand Army of Gen. Sherman. What is Money?—The Commis sioner of Internal Revenue has had oc casion to call attention to the fact that the new law makes the word “money” to include checks, drafts, nnd other instru ments given for the payment of money ; ami, therefore, the receipts for checks, drafts, etc., are to be stamped as if given for money. The new internal revenue law differs from tho old one concerning brokers' sale of slocks and bonds, which, under the latter, were assessed upon the basis of tiie par value, but under the former, from August Ist, instant, the stamps must he nflixed upon tho basis of the amount of sales. Granite and Ikon Fronts. —ln walking through Broad and other streets on which tbete are Business libuses fin ished or in process of erection, one can not help remarking the mania for pro gression, evident in tho . style of finish which has obtained at the North and in the South—we mean the remod eling old buildings so as to make them appear new, by putting in elegant gran ite and iron fronts. In busiue-s, men must not be Pharisaical. —that is, they should remember that it were well to have tho interior of a build ing correspond with the nicety of the articles therein offered for sale ; and it were better stili to have all complete— the goods of the very best quality; the establishment fashioned after the most approved pattern. New Ftn\t—Attention is called to the announcement made lit our advertising columns by Messrs. Stallings & Rogers, who have associated with them Mr. George G. Ould, in the Furniture and Upholstering business. The firm’s name will be Stallings, Rogers & Cos. Messrs. Stallings & Rogers arc well known to the citizens of Augusta and vicinity, as is also Mr. Ould, whose thorough business qualifications emi nently fit him lor a place iu the picture with his associates. Loves Eggs.—A gentleman in Floyd county is reported by the Rome Courier to he a great lover of eggs. His name is Nettles; is fifty years of age. He ate .‘seventy-three raw eggs on a recent occasion. He contracts with a family grocery merchant for as many eggs as he could sucK, agreeing to pay twenty five cents for the meal. He ate all the merchant had, and said “he would like a few more," but yet did not wish to trouble the merchant to go out and get them. A Good Sign — “ What is It?” Yolger, over the way, has procured a good sign—a short, fat fellow, with a thick head, and all sorts of bright colors —which he has placed in front of his cigar shop, nnd attracts considerable attention. Yolger saw one at the North and had it duplicated. It's a funny looking fellow—a queer “what is it?”— and makes people laugh who chance to get a view of it. It might be mistaken for Prentice, of the Louisville Journal , on account of its handsome physiog nomy. The Southern Cultivator. —This valuable journal far August is at hand. Its popularity is eminently deserved, and always increasing. If there is any agriculturalist or horticulturist who does not take the Southern- Cultivator , ho or she should rectify tho error at once. An Excellent Idea. —At a late meeting of Vigilant Fire Company, No. 3, that clever gentleman, 'Mr. A. Stevens, a fireman of thirty years’ experience, delivered a brief address, in which, he proposed the establishment of a Library iu the Company’s hull for the use of the members. This is an excellent idea, and we hope that Mr. Stevens’ proposition will be acceded to by the Vigilant*. We shall allude to this subject on some future oc casion. Those beautiful goods have just ar rived, and M. Cohen will supply you with any style, and at prices that will be entirely satisfactory. His stock of boots and shoes has been selected with great care, and with a desire to please. We direct attention to his advertisement in an other column.
