They Call U» How a Euined
People.
BT ANXIR R. BLOCBT.
They call us now a ruined people,
Our swords within their scabbards rust.
Out bravest men have fallen in battle,
Our conquered Banner trails the dust.
Our dead we mourn —how sadly, vainly I
We plant the cypress and the yew,
The only -lomfort in our sorrow,
They died —thank Qod—to duty true.
And still we have our honor left as,
We’ll guard It snored till we die;
Tho legacy we leave our ohildren.
When we beneath the turf shall lie.
We have no broad lands now to bequeath
them,
No thousand slaves to which they are
heir,
No gold or silver for their dowry,
No shadod grounds and mansion fair.
Nothing but a Uttered, bloody Banner,
And notes no nation will redeem;
Tho graves of all our murdered heroes,
The fragments of our broken dream.
Where are now the troops that marched so
gaily ?
Their banners streaming in the wind ;
With smiles at thoughts of future glory,
And tears for those they left behind ?
In old Virginia’s blood-stained valleys,
Their bones are bleaching in the sun ;
On Tennessee’s broad fields they’re sleeping,
Those fields their valor vainly won.
Alas ! bright eyes grown dim with weeping,
And waiting for some fallen brave.
Alas ! young heart, whose joy lies buried
In some far, namoless soldier-grave !
Where is tho “glory” of your dreaming,
The “fame” of your brave “private” now ?
The angels know he died for duty.
They crowned with wreaths nis victor
brow !
Where is your “soldier-boy,” mother,
Whose gay-hued sash your fondness
tied ?
And, sister, where the manly brother,
Whose sword you buckled on with pride?
In some dark, loathsome Norihorn prison,
His pulse grew faint —his cheeks turned
pale,
And thus he died, whilo some kind comrade
Brought to your home the mournful tale.
And “when the cruel war” was “over,”
And our brave boys marched home again,
Where were the honors and ovations
We dreamed would meet the coming
train ?
Triumphal arches ? Sackcloth rather,
For ruined hopes and homes like ours !
And ashes—type of desolation,
Instead of bays and wreathes of flowers!
Are these the “braves” who marched so
gaily.
To sound of trumpet, fife and drum,
In tattered grey—sleeves ragged, empty f
Is this the way we dreamed they’d come?
With grief-dimmed eyes for comrades
sleeping,
To wake no more at roll-call, till
The Great Creator bids them answer !
Lord 1 ’tis thy doing—heart, be still!
Maimed, crippled, crushed, half broken
hearted,
Shall we withhold our mead of praise ?
What if the cause we loved is vanquished?
And we’vo no heart to gather bays,
Are they—our heroes—less deserving?
They failed—but ’twas God’s holy will,
Ruined in fortune —poor—defeated,
They bear their fate like heroes atill.
And ye—oh ! women of our Southland,
Who cheered our nobie warriors on,
Who soothed the wounded soldier's death
bed,
And prayed when even hope was gone :
Cheer ye the living in their sorrows.
Exalt and purify their hearts,
Be “ministering angels” truly,
In peace, as war, act well your parts.
And though we are a stricken people,
Our riches fled—our homes bereft,
Our lands a waste —our children beggared,
All ia not .one—reeve honor left.
Thu faded gray—so sacred—tells us
Os brave hearts sleeping in its fold ;
Taat tattered Flag—of hands that waved it
To glory once—now palsied, cold.
They preach us lessons of endurance
And duty, and the words we’ll heed,
Although while toiling and rebuilding
At every poro our torn hearts bleed !
May we not hope to reap in gladness,
Although we sow our seed in tears ;
And hear those words : “The South victo
rious,”
To thrill our hearts in ooraing years.

CHOLERA.
A CERTAIN CURE
For this Disease may be
found in tbe uaa of
ife PERRY DAVIS'
VEGETABLE
Pain JKiller,
St. Lodi*, Mo., June 14, 1849.
Mr. A T. Woodward, Agent of Perry David
Pain Killer :
Dbab Sib : I feel it a duty I owe to the
public, to make known tbe value of Perry
Davis’ Pain Killor, and my experience in
aeing it for some of the complaint* for
which it i* highly recommended. In April
last, on your recommendation, I purchased
a one dollar bottle of yon for pains with
which I have long been afflicted, and made
use of it on my trip down to New Orleans,
with the most gratifying and beneficial
effects. On my return to this city, the
Cholera made its appearance among some
of my passengers. I made use of the Pain
Killor, having no other remedy on board,
and, to my surprise and gratification, fouod
it gave immediate relief! On my arrival
in St. Louis, I called on you and got four
large bottles, and stated to you my confi
dence in it as an infallible Cholera remedy,
and remarking to you that I wanted no
other Cholera remedy on my boat. I made
use of the four bottles on my trip to New
Orleans and back, for Cholera and some
other complaints for which it is recom
mended, and met with the most astonishing
success ; when I ordered from you six more
one dollar bottles. Since then I have
made two more trips to New Orleans and
back; and on my previous tripup I bad
more than
SEVENTY CASES OF CHOLERA
on board, when the PAIN KILLER was
immediately used wiih themost astonishing
results. In all cases where it was used in
time, it gave relief in a very short time ;
and I can, with confidence, say to tbo pub
lic, that in all the first stages of Cholera,
when taken in time, it is, in my opinion, an
infallible remedy! aDd after a fair trial
with it for several weeks, and lor four
trips to New Orleans and back, and using
it for Cholera and other complaints for
which it is recommended, no consideration
whatever would induce me to leave port
without a good supply—believing it to be a
medicine that no officer of a boat or any
family would be without a single day after
using one bottle; believing it to be the
most valuable family medicine known to
the world for all tbe different complaints
for which it is recommended.
P. S.—Please send me six largo bottles
for this trip.
J. M. BnOADWELL,
Captain Steamer Adriatic.
I most cordially unite with Capt. Broad
well in reoommendiug Perry Davis’s Pain
Killer to the public, having myself been
severely attacked with the Cholera, and
found relief in a few hours by using the
Pain Killer, and have mysolf administered
it to more than fifty persons attacked with
the Cholera, aud when used in time, a cure
was effected in a few hours, and take pleas
ure in recommending it to the public as an
invaluable medicine, that no individual
should be without a single hour.
J. F. Boffington,
Clerk Steamer Adriatic.
Davis’ Pain Killer. —ln to-day’s Union
will be found an advertisement of this cele
brated remedy. The certificates appended
from the captain aud clerk of the steamer
Atlantic we know to be genuine, and
founded on facts, as they verbally stated in
our office the substance of what they pub
lish. —St. Louie Union.
