—A Mrs. Shelton, of New Haven,
has been lying in a state of suspended
animation, or trance, for several days.
—Some Baltimore capitalists are
trying to purchase Cobb's Island, off
the coast of Northampton, Va., for a
watering place.
—Eighty years ago there were but
60.000 Catholics and twenty-five priests
in the United States, while now there
are 4,400,000 members of the Church
and 2,500 priests.
—The Churches at Montgomery,
Ala., hold united services every Sunday
night. The ministers of the several
Churches officiate in turn in the united
service.
—Miniature bowling-alleys, for in
door amusement, are being introduced
very generally. They are about eighty
feet long, and a foot or so wide, with
balls and pins Complete.
—A black man in Jackson, Wiscon
sin, recently snatched the Irat from a
blind man’s head and ran off with it*

—Swiuburue, the rising English poet,

—Major Joseph Stevens, the cele
brated dwarf, died of apoplexy, at his
residence, Lyman, Maine, recently, aged

—Miss Lottie Robinson, of West
Union, lowa, was somewhat startled, a
few days ago, while breaking a hen's

inches long, and as large as a pipestem,

—The Times says the Richmond mar
kets were recently flooded with “bogus
twenty-five cent notes of tho long pat
tern,’’ and the editor saw, “in the hands
of a negro marketman, who had all faith
in its genuineness, anew fifty cent coun
terfeit note which, in point of execution,
was interior to an ordinary blackinsr-box
label."
—A young man named Lloyd visited
a young lady at Frankford, Mo., whose
parents were opposed to his attentions,
and while endeavoring to arrange with
his betrothed for their marriage, a quarrel
ensued between him and the girl’s parents
and he killed them both with a knife,
and then fled, but was pursued and
was arrested.
—One of the editors of a New Orleans
paper, soon after beginning to learn the
printing business, went to court a
preacher’s daughter. The next time he
attended the meeting he was taken down
at hearing the minister announce as his
text, “My daughter is grievously tor
mented with a devil.”
—A French farmer was recently try
ing to persuade a young ward to marry
his daughter (the ward was very
wealthy) ; he said: “She has talent,
even to her fingers’ ends.” “I should
prefer a thimble there.” “She will be
the best of literary wives.” “I should
prefer the best of housewives.” “She
will go to posterity.” “I had much
rather she would go to market.”
—A little girl, near Milton, Pa., was
sent to the fields a few days since to
carry lunch to the field hands. Re
maining away longer than was necessary,
search was made for her, when she was
found strangled to death by a black
snake. The reptile had coiled itself
several times about her neck, and had
to be cut in two before he would release
his hold.
