'ttiESDAY MORNING
Couldn't Sleep.— A clergyman, was
once sent for in the middle of the night
"by one of the ladies of his congregation.
‘‘Well,my good woman," said he,“so you
are very ill, and require the consolation
of religion? What can ‘ I do for you?"
“No,” replied the old lady, “I am only
nervous and can’t sleep.” “How can I
help that?" asked the parson. “Oh, sir,
y6u always put me to sleep so ' nicely
wheu I go to church, that I thought if
you wouM only preach a little for me!’"
The parson made tracks.
Mary and her Mother. —-“ Mother,
why do you read the Bible so much?"
said little Mary; “haven’t you read it
all through ?”
“Yes, my dear, a great many times,’
said her mother. v
“Well, then, you must know all there
is in it by this time ; and yet you read
it every day.”
“Do you remember, last summer,
Mary, when you were away at Miss
Booker’., school y»
“Ye*, mother.”
“You told me that when yon got a
letter from home you used to read it
over and over till it was almost worn
out.”
“And so I did, mother.”
“Well, what made you read that letter
so often ? You knew all that there was
irrtf
“Because it seemed a pleasure, and
made me think about home, aud you,
and.father.”
“So, my dear, I read over some parts
of the Bible that I have read hundreds
of times before, for the same reason,
that it reminds me of my home, of my
Heavenly Father, and my Saviour, and
of what He wishes me to'do ; and, there
fore, I love to read it.”
“Is heaven my home, too, mother?’’
said little Mary; “shall you take me
with you,when nto you?”
“I cannot tell you, my dear; I cannot
give you leave to go to heaven, but I
know who can.”
“Ah, you mean Jesus Christ, mother?”
“Yes, my dear, you must ask him ;
and you must read and learn to under
stand this Book, which is like a letter
from Him to us, to tell us all about
Himself and heaven. When you can, I
hope you will love to read the Bible as
much as I do.”
Family Bible. —Within the last few
weeks I carried to my home one of the
richest trophies. It was the family Bible
that my father aud mother used to read.
Dear old book 1 I feel like kissing it
every time I look upon it. It is very old
—no gilt edges or ridged cover. It is
worn and faded, but it is one of the hand
somest books I ever owned. Just on the
stand, and they consecrated their alliance
by a chapter from its pages. That book
they read, and studied, and caressed. I
see it now lying on mother’s lap as she
leaned over in her old age and studied
the promises. Every morning of every
day the sunlight gilded that page as
father opened it. They read it when the
children died, and there is where a tear
fell at the story of resurrection. That chap
ter on the Psalms is worn by oft perusal,
and this verse which says, “Cast thy
burden on the Lord, aud he will sustain
thee.” Ah! this was the staff they
leaned on for more than three score
years. This was the tree that oozed a
balm for all thier heartaches. This was
the light that shone when the world
grew dark. Handle it gently, for every
page of that book has a tender history.
I will yet wrap it up in purple and
damask. In my dying hour I want it
close by where I cau see it. I will charge
my children to let everything else go
rather than that Bible. Dear old book !
I leafed you when on my mother’s knee;
I looked at the pictures, while she looked
into the mys teries of salvation ! May all
joy fly my heart, and my sight go out
into darkness, and my every cup of glad
ness torn into wormwood and gall, and
to mft .life become a plague, and all
sweet sounds jar into discord, and my
head be pillowless, and my name ac
cursed, if ever I forget to honor,
venerate, and love my mother's Bible.
