WEDNESDAY MORNING. ..Aug. 29, 1866 Cotton Inspection Districts in Georgia. —The new Internal Revenue law requires the Commissioner of In ternal Revenue to designate certain places in the cotton-growing regions of the South where the Assessors and Col lectors of Internal Revenue shall repair to inspect cotton brought in by planters for that purpose. Acting Commissioner Holland has just commenced to make the designations for the Fourth Collec tion District of Georgia: Mondays— West Point, Ringgold and Athens. Tues. days—Lagrange and Athens. Wednes days—Newnan and Social Circle. Thursdays—Palmetto, Kingston and Rome. Fridays—Atlanta, Cartersville and Stone Mountain. Saturdays— Jonesboro’ and Marietta. New and Dangerous Counterfeits. —Counterfeit §SO compound interest notes of July 16, 1864, counterfeit fives on the Citizens’ National Bank of Ful ton, N. Y., and counterfeit fives on the First National Bank of Cairo, Illinois, have made their appearance. The points of difference between the counterfeit and the genuine §SO interest notes are so slight as to require the closest observa tion to detect them. The words “three years after date” on the top of the bill nearly touch the words “Treasury De partment,” while in the genuine there is a space three-eighths of an inch between. The last button of Hamilton's coat is a quarter ot an inch from the lower margin of the small ssos, while in the genuine the button touches the margin. . Protracted MEE-ring.—We are glad to announce that a protracted meeting is being held in the Baptist Church of this place. Besides the Rev. Luther Gwat ney, resident pastor, the Ilev. Mr. May field, a gifted and zealous minister, from Laurens* and Rev. Mr. Mealing, of our District, are in attendance. They have been preaching twice or thrice a day since Sunday morning, to large and in terested audiences. If we mistake not, their attention is to labor for some days in special efforts for the revival of pure and undefiled religion ; and for increase of spirituality and holy zeal among the children of the kingdom ; and for the conversion and reclamation of the chil dren of the world. Our earnest hope— the earnest hope of every right-minded man—is for the amplest blessing of > od upon their efforts.— Edgefield Adver tiser. Death of Two well known Citizens- With much regret we chronicle the very recent death of two well known citizens of this District—than whom none were more respected—John W. Munday, Esq., of the Antioch vicinity, and James M. Harrison, Esq., of the neighborhood of Liberty Hill.—Edge field Advertiser. —A carpenter who was always prog nosticating evil to himself was one day upon a five story building, upon which had fallen a rain. The roof being slippery, he lost his footing, and, as be was descending toward the eaves, he ex claimed : “Just as I told you 1” Catch' ing, however, in the tin spout, he kicked off his shoes and regained a place of safety .from which he thus delivered him self: “I know’d it—there’s a pair of shoes gone to thunder 1” —As an instance of the value of small things, it is ascertained that eyelets, costing but seventeen or eighteen cents per thousand, are consumed to the value of four million dollars per year, so that over two hundred and fifty thousand millions of these little conveniences are annually used in hoop-skirts, shoes, etc. —The vast herds of buffaloes which darkened the Westen plains a few years ago are fast disappearing, and some means will have to he adopted to keep the ludians from starving in con sequence. —An Irishman, on being told to grease the wagon, returned in about an hour afterwards and said: “I’ve greased every part of the wagon but them sticks the wheels hang on." Governor Orr has issued a proclama tion, convening the South Carolina Le gislature in extra session on the 4th of September. The purpose is the adapta tion of State laws to the recent acts of Congress, and for the relief of financial embarrassments of the people of the State. ®{re Dailg l^xtss.
