Gbfito to Inquire into rnfc Matter.
The recent discovery of a correspon
dence between the supposed suborned
witnesses in the case of Jefferson Davis,
before the Judiciary Committee, and S.
Conover, and Conover and Carter, and
Judge Holt, has created no little feeling
at Washington, and President Johnson,
it is stud, is taking measures to look into
the matter.
Diphtheria.—This disease having
been, to a limited extent, prevalent in
onr midst during the present season, we
present a recipe which we find in the
columns of an exchange. It is said
that in the thousand cases in which it
has been used, not a single patient was
lost. The treatment consists in thor
oughly swabbing tJie back.
Chops in Screven County. —The
editor of the Waynesboro' Times re
turned, a few days ago, from atrip to
Screven county. He reports the
crop prospects are much better there
than in Burke. The grain yield has
been unexpectedly heavy. The cotton
crop will turn out a reasonable profit.
Fenian Bugbear. —Another Fenian
arsenal has been discovered at Kill
mallock, in the county of Limerick.
Considerable ammunition was seized.
Three respectable farmers in the neigh
borhood afterward absconded, fearing
arrest.
Note This.—A jealous lover, loiter

in Springfield, 111., was shot dead for a
burglar. Served him right—the Fates
did. Jealous young men, and some old
men, note this.

Personal. —General Tilison has re
turned to pur City. We are, really grat
ified to have this gentleman in our
midst. He is an officer of whom the
Government ought to be proud. Just
in his decisions and firm in his actions,
he has been of no little service to our

her line of business, some of which will

We advise the ladies to give her a call.
Military. —ls our young men desire
to organize voluntary military compa

right to do so now. We presume, how
ever, that they have but little taste for
such amusements at present.

[The following is ‘ perhaps the best:
!‘The Churchyard was surrounded by a

nice balancing of the body, and was one
of the favorite feats of neighboring boys.

and one day whilst reading the burial
service at the grave side, his eye caught

to make the following interpolation in
the solemn words of the funeral ser

English vs. Pj.ai^b.—A
Washington correspondent of the New

preparing to make another furpxal de

the property of American citizens by
the Confederate privateers. Errgljmd:

' Declined. —A Paris letter states that
General Beauregard has declined every
offer made him whilst abroad, and pro
poses to return to New Orleans as soon
as the object of his visit is accomplished.
i Personal.— Rev. Silk Lovick Pierce
was in the eity yesterday. The Doctor
seemed to be in the enjoyment of his
usual health, -
—A lady once declared that she
could not understand how gentlemen
could smoke. “It absolutely shortens
their lives,” said she. “I don’t know
that,” replied a gentleman. “There’s
my father, who smokes every day, and
he is now seventy years old.” “Well,”
was the reply, “if he had uever smoked,
he might have been eighty.”
—A woman in Memphis, living en

died soon thereafter. The woman was
too much prostrated to even cry for
help, and it was several days before she
was discovered with her decomposing
infant at her side.
—The proposition to elect John Mor

New York District is meeting with
much opposition, and meetings are
being held to prevent it.
—A hypocrite may spin so fair a
thread as to deceive his own eyes. He
may admire the cobweb, and know not
