An Agricultural Society For
Richmond County.
We are pleased to learn that some of
the farmers and planters of Richmond
County have, at last, resolved to organ
ize an Agricultural Society. For the
inaguration of this movement, a general
attendance of the agriculturists of the
County is requested at a meeting to be
held tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon,
at the residence of Mr. W. A. Rartlett,
near Allen's Station. We have already
urged this subject on the attention of
our readers, and we need not repeat uny
arguments in its favor now. They are
patent to all who are interested in it,
and will have their due weight in de
ciding the present action of all con
cerned. We only repeat our opinion,
that such a Society will redound to the
interests of the farmers and planters,
and urge them again to take such an
interest in it as will ensure its proper
success and permanent organization.
In all public interests, unity of action
must result in good, and in agricultural
associations, discussions of pertinent
subjects, and expressions of experience
of members must result in good to that
particular interest. It is to be hoped,
therefore, that the present movement
will meet with the hearty approval of
our agriculturists, and prove a complete
success. And not only should it be
inaugurated here; but it should be
imitated in every County in the State,
so that the entire body ot farmers and
planters in Georgia inav be united lor
the general good of themselves and the
State.
“Brick” Pomeroy on Courting.—
facetious gentleman gives below his
opiuion on the iunocent amusement
known as “ Courting.” It contains a
clever mixture of sound sense with the
ludicrous. Hear him :
Those other girl of ours, as we are
informed by letter, had done gone and
pot well locked unto a tinkerest of the
gospel, who attended prayer meeting,
swops horses, acts chaplain in the army,
steals, and gets drunk on the sly. Oh,
ileqr I this is much misery. Wherefore
shall we flee now ? How we used to
do the courting fur those girl 1 Candy,
peanuts, worm lozenges, peppermint
drops, little balls of honey soap, night
blooming for seriousness, and such evi
dences did we pour into them lap of
hers, whereon at vesper chimes this
heart of ours did rest, so sweetly rest!
Oh, dear, Oh I K—lista !
We used to blacken our boots, starch
our hair, grease our shirt, and curl our
eyebrows for them girl. And we drove
horses for paternal derivative to culti
vate corn ; and we milked the brindled
heifer as what no other boy could milk,
and we split oven wood, and who would
not for her ma ?
And at night, when bats came forth,
and tumble bugs crawled over the lea,
and young pullets sat in maiden medita
tion fancy free, holding their heads
under wing so as to learn love by hear
ing their hearts beat, we would hasten
under Kalista’s window, and she would,
with her lily white hand, haul us up by
the hair until we arrived at the bower of
love, as she styled her garret. ’Twas
thus our hair became less, and our con
fectionery for Kalista increased.
When the week had busted on the
rock of Saturday night, we used to wan
der by the brooklet anklet the brooklet
wander too. And Kalista went forth
with us. Hand in hand, like the Siamese
twinsters, we roamed ; we sat on the
dewy bank to catch cold in our heads,
and luxuriate on the hank "wet with
dew.” And we used to recline against
a fatherly and motherly elm tree, and
squeeze each other’s hand as we rolled
our eyes and peeked upward into the
blue vault, our spirits longed to vault
into it, but didn’t. O, this sparking is
heaven in two volumes, with the price
mark omitted 1 Did you ever spark?
If not, advance your works upon a fe
male crinoline dear, and commence
active hostilities at once.
The Best Thing. —The New York
Times, of a late date, very wisely says
that the best thing that could happen to
the negro race, now that they are pos.
sessed of freedom, would be, so far as
national politics are concerned, to cease
altogether being an exciting element,
and, so far as they themselves are con
cerned, to assiduously give their atten
lion to education, the acquisition of
property, and moral and social improve
ment. In these directions they will
find abundant and profitable ground of
activity for some time to come.
GRANITE
An Improved Rail Road Turn-
Table.— Captain G. B. Massey, of Mo
bile, has obtained letters patent for the
United Btates, for an improved rail
road turn table, which i* pronounced by
scientific men at thqjlortb to be one of
the most valuable patents ever issued
by the United States Patent Office. It
is generally known that locomotives,
with their tenders, are now turned or
reversed, nt each end of their route by
hand, requiring the labor of four men.
The Mobile Tribune says that,
by Captain M.’s invention, the loco
motive is made to do this work without
the assistance of any one unconnected
with the engine, and in one-fourth the
time usually required by the present
mode. We learn that a patent was or
dered to be issued for the invention
within twenty-four hours after the re
ceipt of the model, drawing, and specifi
cations at the Patent Office, which is an
evidence ot its novelty and great utility,
as it generally requires from two to
three months to procure patents.
Ned Buntline. —A recent New York
letter says : “And this reminds me yes
terday I met with a mau whose name
has been before the public, and noto
riously. He once possessed a noble in
tellect; but now, alas! he is but a re
move from a brute. I speak of E. Z. C.
Judson, alias ‘Ned Buntline.’ His has
been a wonderful career, but ever tend
ing downwards. Did dissipation ever
tend otherwise ? A sailor, soldier,
author,duelist, murderer and drunkard—
lie excelled in all. No better sailor ever
sailed ship; a splendid swordsman ; his
was the pen that only genius wields.
Judson is a drunkard now—the vilest of
the vile—and the wreck of a man. A
wretched, homeless vagabond. And
such is ever the late of those whose gifts
of intellect are perverted from their high
a id noble purposes.”
Railways in the United States.—
In September, 1865, there were in the
United States five hundred and three
rail road com panies,, with nearly 36,000
miles of road, and spending for annual
expenses $2,266,360,000. Pennsylvania
has more miles of rail road than any
ether State, reporting 3,350 miles; and
during 1865 it constructed more miles
of rail soad than New York and New
England combined. Ohio is the second
State, with 3,310 miles, and Illinois the
third, with 3,166. These returns do not
include horse rail roads.

Augusta Savings Bank.
This institution has been
paying, for the past year, fifteen cents
on the dollar for the Certificates of Deposit
which it issued during the war in exchange
for Confederate money. This per eentsge
has been paid on the recommendation of a
committee, composed of Dr. Joseph Milli
gan, Josiah Sibley, Esq., and W. J. Owens,
Esq., three disinteraetedcitizensof Augusta,
of high character aud position, who exam
ired and valued all the assets of the Bank.
This valuation did not amount to fifteen
per cent, of our circulation, but the com
mittee estimated that we might be able to
pay this per centage on the supposition that
many of the bills had been lost or de
stroyed. Since their examination, all the
Exchange, Coin, Bullion, Bank Bills, Bonds,
Stocks, Coupons, Cotton and Merchandise
held by the Bank hare been sold. Some of
those have proved to be less valuable than
the estimate of the committee, and some
more; hut on the whole an advance of
nearly twenty per cent, has been realized;
so that the Bank will be able to pay
eighteen cents in the dollar for its change
bills, unless the number destroyed shall be
found to be smaller than anticipated. No
larger per centage than this can be paid
hereafter, as we have nothing now to ap»
preeiate.
We have recently investigated the amount
received by the Bank for its Certificates,
counting the Confederate money at its
value when received, and find that it was
less than eighteen cents in the dollar; so
that this Bank will pay hereafter not only
to its depositors, but to its bill holders, the
full amount received.
The new Savings Bank of Augusta, char
tered by the last Legislature, will rodeem
the change bills of the “Augusta Savings
Bank,” at their Office, No. 223 Broad street.
