—Short visits are the best, as the fly
said when he alighted on a hot stove.
—Trying to the feelings—to tio a
pretty girl’s bonnet, without tasting her
lips.
—What it the use of sighing am’
weeping as we float down the stream o
Time? Why make the voyage of lift ;
wailing voyage ?
—Within a month the manufactories
of France will have delivered to the
army two hundred thousand breech
loading muskets.
—ln Raleigh, North Carolina, on the
20th of September, a State Convention
of "unmistakeable loyalists” is to be
held. Nominations for Governor will
he made.
—“Now, papa, tell me wbat is hum
bug.” ‘‘lt is,” replied papa, “when
mama pretends to be fond of me, and
puts no buttons on my shirt till remind
ed of it a dozen times.”
—The sales of books at the trade sale
in New York, now progressing there,
ate quite large, and prices are about
liftcen per cent, more than the Spring
sales,
—A female school teacher, in her
advertisement, stated that she was “com
plete mistress of her own tongue.”
that’s the case,” said a caustic old bach
elor, “she can’t ask too much for her
services.”
—When Daniel Webster was a young
man, about commencing the study ol
law, he was advised not to enter the
legal profession, for it was already
crowded. Hisgjreply was, “There is
room enough at the top.”
Supporting the Home Folks.—Ail j
advertisement appears in a late issue of j
the Early county (Ga.) News, calling a !
meeting of the farmers of C!ay, Fto-I’-.!
Calhoun, Miller and Randolph couuties, i
Ga., to be held at Fort Gaines on the |
25th instant, “for the purpose of select- j

What will the merchants in this Stab
think of that idea 7
Delawa re.—lt seems that the Radi
cals whooped over the result of the
Wilmington Election before they were
out of the woods. The official returns
say that Mr. Valentine, Radical, was
elected Mayor by a majority of only
281, while the same party last year car
ried the city by a majority of 495, show
ing a Radical loss of 214 on one of the
fullest votes ever polled in the city at a
municipal election.
Discovery of Copper.—The Rome
Courier reports that Captain L. W. Da
vidson, who has been prospecting for
Lewis, Erwin & Cos., of Clarksville,
Tenn., has discovered copper about
nine miles below CeHtre, in Cherokee
county, Ala. The bed is considered
richly worth working, and arrangements
for sinking shafts and thoroughly testing
are being made. The specimens of ore
shown to us are rich.
Fatal Duel.—A duel was fought on
the 7th instant, between Walter Coggs
well, Postmaster at Wayne, and J. T.
Wright, Editor of the Wayne Gazette,
Arkansas. Their weapons were swords
—the cause, jealousy. Both were
frightfully mangled, having fought
until the loss of blood caused them to
faint. Both will die.
Judge Holt and Montgomery Blair.

of character, to be brought by Judge
Advocate Holt against Montgomery
Blair, who asserted in a recent speech
that he (Molt) was guilty of the execu
