She has 1,600 barrels of whale oil, and
12,000 pounds of whalebone.
—An enterprising London artist has
painted a large picture of the recent
Hyde Park riots, and has it on exhibi
tion in the Pantheon.
—The oldest man in New England,
Mr. James Piper of Barre, entered upon
his one hundred and fourth year last
week. He is bed ridden, but retains all
his mental faculties.
—A fine Rembrandt, called “Christ
Blessing Little Children,” a picture five
feet and a half high, has been pur
chased by the London National Gallery
for $35,000.
—A young and pretty servant girl of
Montreal lately committed suicide by
throwing herself into a deep well. A
truant lover was at the bottom—not of
the well, but the poor girl’s heart.
—The President has made the follow
ing appointments for Philadelphia:
Treasurer of the Mint, James McKib
beu; Postmaster, Wm. Millward; Naval
Officer, J. R. Flanigen.
—A Western young lady, while on
her way to be married, was run over and
killed. A confirmed old maid sagely
and savagely remarked, “she has avoid,

—A child was lately devoured by an
alligator near Galveston, in full view of
its father, who was unable to save his
little daughter. The monster was after
wards shot, and the remains of the child
recovered.
—The gamester, if he die a martyr to
bis profession, is doubly ruined. He
adds to his soul every other loss, and,
by. the act of suicide, renounces earth to
forfeit Heaven.
—Parson Brownlow stated in New
York And in Faneuil Hall that he had
made arrangements for arms and men
for the avowed purpose, of resisting any
political demonstration that may be
made in Tennessee.
—“Cholera cigar” is the last notion
of the tobacconists of the East end of
London. The cigars are prepared with
opium, and as opium-eaters never suffer
from cholera, smokers of the cigar will
be exempt from the at least so
say the traders.
—At the recent meeting of the French
Academy of Science, the Germsas car
ried off the chief prizes—Prof. Boss, of
Berlin, receiving the first for his com
parative grammar; and Dr. Freund
second, for his Latin Dictionary. A
young lady, Victoria Lenand, won the
title of “Officer of the Imperial Acad
emy.”
