Aaa I auy swoon away and draam
I loan upon hit breast.
A South* rn man for Southern cause,
Rogardlaa* of tha cui,
Won Soatbara gray, 'aoaih Southern tar,
Uo fought and won—l loot!
And though the marshaled hoala in 111
. Tramy hoary on my heart,
I « rather weep than blnah for him—
Thank God ! ho boro hie part 1
How long ago, I cannot tall—
It mat ono hundred year*.
For Time hae hold with ncarlot hand
An hoar-glam dimmed by teari.
God bleu the gentle onu who came
At dawning of the year,
And wept with me. and garlanded
Bright lauraU for thy bier.
A widow'* prayer will riae for aye,
Stranger*, for the* and thin*;
Thy kindly hand* that ministered,
How bleat bad they been min*.
An emblem of my widowhood,
I* all that I can bring—
A atainleu harp, four broken chorda,
And on* poor ailent airing.
Ah, wake me not! Thla apirit-hand
That aweep* the green, strong pine
With finger* light, and alrekea my hair
Cnteaaiugly, ia thine.
Kiaae* I preaa upon the earth,
Oh, stilleat arms, unfold !
Thou wilt not giro me kiss for kits.
Oh, tod, thou art ao cold.
If life and death were mine to choose,
I’d be the coldest clod
On thy dead heart, than tiring flower
Tbat breathes above the sod.
I wait! sleep on where comrades sleep
Off guard ; thy warrior soul
Would rather rise in ranks when God
Shall call his muster roll!

"That /foster should a bankrupt be,
Is not so rery Odd-d'yesee;
If it be true, as I am instructed,
So 111-km-kad his hooks conducted."
There is a pun, too, in these well
known lines; but then there is some
thing else:
“Ox a Talkativk Pker.
"They say he has no heart: but I dony

He has a heart—and gets his speeches by

The Hox. Jefferson Davis. —From
a prirate letter which we hare received
from the estimable wife of the distin
guished prisoner at Fortress Monroe,
■we learn, says the Charleston Courier,
of the 28th instant, with inexpressible
regret, that his health continues to de
cline, and that the pecuniary circum
stances of his family are becoming very
embarrassing. Nothing is known to
Mrs. Davis of the probable iuture of
her husband, and we confess to see
little encouragement to hope for his
early release. It is now rendered quite
probable that hia trial for treason will
never take place, and there is but little
danger to fear from the “assassination”
charges after the Conover exposures
which have been recently made. Mean
while the prisoner is dying from con
finement, and his family brought to the
verge of starvation, whilst the Govern
ment declines to restore him to liberty
and refuses to try him.
Maine Elections.—Full returns of
the Maine election, show that, though
the Republicans have largely increased
their Tote, they have not increased it in
so great a proportion as the Conserva
tive increase. The full vote for 1805
and 1866-is as follows <
IS, ss—Rep 54,231 Dem 3! 435
leoti Rad 6!»,3(i'J Con 42,676
Increase, 15,138 "lO,«7(J
From this, an exchange says, it ap
pears that while the Conservatives have
•(hied very near one third to their vote
of last year, the Radical increase is but
little over one fourth of theirs. If this
proportion of gains on both sides is ex
hibited in New York, it will g i ve the
State to the Conservatives ; and if main
tained in other States, it will secure for
them gains in a number of Congressional
districts. The prospect is gloomy, but
by no means hopeless or desperate.
—A man, pretty comfortably drunk,
was holding on to a post, when a friend
inquired what was the matter. “Mat
ter!” exclaimed the fellow; “I'm in a
quandary.” “Why?” “Because if I
hold on here I shall freeze, and if I let
go I shall fall into the dock and be
drowned.”
A great many anecdotes are rela
ted of personal bravery. We would like
to see that man who would deliberately '
allow a woman catch him making
mouth’s at her baby.
—“ilay I be married, mama /” asked
• brunette of sixteen to her mother.

—When Milton was blind, lie married
a shrew. The Duke of Buckingham
called her a rose. “I am no judge of
colors,” said Milton, “and it may be so
for I feel the thorns daily.”
—“Jack, your wife is not so pen

Killer.
We beg to call tho attention of the pub
lic to this long tested and unrivalled
FAMILY MEDICINE.
The PAIN KILLER is a purely vegeta
bl* compound; and while it is a most e -
cient Remedy for Pain, it is a perfectly safe
Medicine even in the most unskillful hands.
FOR SUMMER COMPLAINT,
Or any other form of bowel disease in chil
dren or adults, it is an almost certain cure,
and has, without doubt, been more success
ful in curing the various kinds of
CHOLERA
than any other known remedy, or even the
most skillful physician. In India, Africa
and China, where this dreadful disease is
ever more or less prevalent, the
TAIN KILLER
is considered by the natives, as well as Eu
ropean residents in those climates, a SURE
REMEDY. Asa Tonic for the Stomach, it
is unrivalled. A few doses will relieve se
vere cases of INDIGESTION, and it is
often a perfect cure for
DYSPEPSIA,
in its most aggravated forms. Its tonic and
stimulating properties, arousing the system
to vigor and action, render it a most effec
tual cure for COLDS AND COUGHS, when
used according to directions.
For external applications, it is unsur
passed by any medical preparation.
Rheumatism and Neuralgic Affections are
quickly relieved and often cured by it. Any
Soreness in the Muscles or Joints can be
relieved by its application. It cures in
stantly the most violent
TOOTHACHE.
It should always bo kept near at hand,
to be used in cases of severe BURNS or
SCALDS. If applied immediately, accord
ing to directions, it will give instant relief,
and prevent blistering.
It is peculiarly adapted to the wants of
SEAMEN, and persons making sea voy
ages, and no vessel should sail without a
supply of it. One Captain writes us; “I
have made several voyages—often with emi
grants, and though I keep a good Medicine
Chest, and I have several times had a good
deal of sickness on board, I have found the
I’AIN KILLER so efficient in all cases, as
to entirely preclude the use of all other
Medicines.”
