WEDNESDAY MORNING. (Vt. .1, I***
THE OCTOBER ELECTIONS.
While we lut'd- no politics i>f our own
in the South, and should rather devote
ourselves to other wild important >nh
jeots, yet we cannot be altogether in
«lifterenl to th**. political *u uqn of those
in whose hands our political des'.ir.iiis
arc held. The retail of the approaching
Northern elections will decide the fate
of the South for weal or woe. If the
Democrat* and conservative Repub
licans are successful then we shall have
no reason “to despair of the Republic;’’
hut if, on the other hand, the Radicals
triumph. Heaven protect our javople!
On so momentous a Mi'n-.-ot, therefore,
we cannot repress a feeling of great
anxiety. Relieving that our readers
share in this foeline, we subjoin a few
particulars gleaned from our exchanges,
which will at least prove interesting as
speculations, even il they do not give
any certain indication as to the result.
In the Vermont and Maine elections,
although so thoroughly Radical, some
‘‘crumbs of comfort" are extracted in
the facts that the Conservatives made
large gains on the popular result as well
as the Radicals, and in the House of
Representatives of the former State the
Conservatives have gained two mem
bers. Well this is something at least;
but we hope that it will be largely im
proved ou iu the succeeding Slate elec
tions.
The Cincinnati Enquirer, a Conser
vativc journal, thus reviews the field oi
the approaching contest in the following
hopeful view ;
A gain of twenty five members of
Congo--- w;i! moo a majority in the
next House against the Jacobins. They
w ill be secured. Two will be gained in
Coutn.ctu'. .1, seven or eight in New
T ork, one in New Jersey, six in Penn
svlvanin, two or three tu Maryland.
Ohio will increase her representation
nine or ten at least, and Indiana will
add three or four to the list. In Ken
tucky we shall gain two, or perhaps
three. Illinois is booked for four or
five. Wisconsin for two, and Michigan
for two. In Missouri there will be a
gain of five or six. This makes fbrtv
five, or twenty more than is required.
The House, under this computation,
would stand :
l’re.eut Anti Jacobins 45
To elect as gains 45
Southern excluded members 50
Total 140
This would leave the Jacobins one
hundred and one members, who would
be in a glorious minority of thirty-nine.
A majority against them in the next
House, according to the present aspect
of affairs is a certainty.
The Columbus (Ga.) Sun <fc Times,
in an article on this subject, also fur
nishes the following interesting facts
and figures:
The States which ho’il elections next
month are Indiana, lowa, Ohio and
Pennsylvania. In l'-vi Indiana voted
for Lincoln by a majority of 3,000 over
all ytlier candidates. In lg:i” it went
Democratic; but, in 1864. under the
pressure of extraordinary influences and
expedientx.it voted f-r Lincoln ncain
by al out -o.ooc inaji fv. There is ;;
stroig O m tcratic and State rich'- ‘ el
injr in Indiana; and tier: are likewise
symptoms of a conservative reaction in
the Republican party. Ihe nnti-K-idi
cals feel confident cd carrying a major
ity of the Congressional delegation.
There is no Governor to he elected this
year, but a State ticket is to he chosen,
consisting of Secretary of State, Audi
tor, Treasurer, Attorney Genera! and
Superintendent of Public Instruction.
The following«re the names of the
candidates lor members ot Congress,
together with the vote in each district
at the last Congressional election in
1*64 :

The Seventh District tliongh given
above as having elected a Democrat
Congressman, is now represented by 11.
D. Washburn (ltep.), lion.D. W. Vor
heos having been ousted from his seat
by the present Radical Congress.
It will be seen that, of the actual
delegation, the Democrats elected three
members, and that, in three others, they
were beaten by lets than a thousand in
each.
In Ohio, there is a lively contest, and
the Democrats ar.d seteding Republi
cans are making great efforts to carry a
majority of the delegation.
Lust year General Cox (Rep.) was
elected Governor by a majority of 29,-
OJff, against a Republican majority of
over 100,000 in 1863, and nearly 31,000
in JSG-I. Should this Republican ma
jonty dwindle down tin; same pro
portion this fall, the conservative State
ticket would lie eh eted. Iho candidates

•Members of the Thirty-ninth Congress.
Mr. Florence, an experienced politi
cian, predicts u grand triumph of the
Conservatives in that State. 1 hev are
working hard, and so are the Radicals.
We have thus given our readers a
statement of the political situation as it
at present exists; and, with them, can
only hope that the predictions of the
Cincinnati Enquirer will be .strictly ful
filled. Such a result will bring peace
and restore confidence to the whole
country, bring out capital, and encour
age labor, thereby giving an impetus n
industry and enterprise, and securing the
prosperity of every section of the Union.
NEWSPAFERS.
There are, comparatively, but few
people who really appreciate the news
paper as it deserves to bo appreciated.
The merchant and the mechanic, as
they glance over its pages, while sipping
their morning cotfee, or poro over its
content - , when the evening repast has
been finished and the family have gath
ered around their cosy fireside: the
dealer iu “stocks and other securities,"
as he runs his eye down the long
columns of figures; the handsome maid
en as she drinks in some pleasantly told
hut improbable love tale—dream not ol
the toil and trouble, the care and ex
pense which the sheet before them has
cost. The first may cast it aside as oi l
rubbish when he has read it, or value it
for its capacity for wrapping paper; the
second may condemn it because its
figures were not more fid! or satisfactory
to his views of the markets ; and th
third may tie up her “nut brown ha; ;
in curls with it, as she retires to rest.
But they do not appreciate it accord
ing to its merits, or the labor which has
been bestowed upon it.
They think not, and, perhaps, care
less, of what the proprietor has to cot:
tend with—how patrons forget or ne
glect to pay up—how incurring bills
must be met and paid without delay—
how paper and ink must be procured—
and all the necessary paraphernalia of
the office kept up : of how much the
editor racks his brain to supply the
daily leader, or pores over exchanges
and ponderous tomes by the midnight
lamp; of the wear and tear of the
,iniquitous “local’s” limbs, as he gics
hither and thither, now here, now there,
seeking the news of the city; of the
poor printer, as his nimble fingers pick j
up the little type, one by' one, and
secures them in their proper j lace—
sweating and straining his eye-sight be
neath the heat and glare of the gas
lights, or nearly freezes his fingers and
thumbs with the cold metals, which lie
has to handle; or of all the other little
: troubles and trials which beset the at
j !at!u s ot a P r i !; ting office. Os course,
they care for none of these. It is none !
j ‘,: f ,heir business. If those concerned
; find the burthens too great, let them
throw those burthens off. The reader
we suppose, pays for his paper, and he
has a light to do with it as he pleases.
Lot. he ought to have some regard for
it—for those who prepare and supply i
him with it. Ik ought to treat it with
more respect than if it were a mere
piece of waste paper. It comes to him
daily—becomes, as it were, one of his
household institutions-—conveys to him
the news from all quarters of thegiobt—
places him now in almost instant com
munication with “all the world and the
rest of mankind,” and saves him, per
haps, hundreds, if not thousands, of
dollars in his business transactions -
builds up great men from very small
foundations, and communities from
slender premises. It is a record of'pa ....
ing events, a review of current news, a
history of the times, worthy of imme
diate respect, and future and constant
preservation.
Rut there is a bright side to the pic
ture as well as a dark one, and it cheers
up all hands in tlm performance of
their arduous duties. There is for the
proprietor increasing subscription lists,
overflowing advertising •columns, arid
quantities of job work ; there is fur the
editor; hoquets, wedding cakes, free
tickets to the shows, samples of eatables,
drinkables, and wearables, and the ex
pressions of satisfaction on the part of
subscribers ; and there is for the print,
ms, the weekly instalment of greenbacks
for services rendered, and an occasional
mint-julep or “hasty plate of soup” Irom
some neighboring restaurant.
Ro, after all, the agreeable and the
disagreeable are pretty well balanced.j
And it (he patron is only satisfied that I
lie or she has got his or her money’s
worth, the proprietor ought to be satis
fied with his share.
In conclusion, we commend the sub
ject to the consideration of our readers,
I and Tub Daily Piif.ss to their kind and
1 liberal patronage.
