®!jt Datlg srtss. City Printer-Official Paper LARGEST CITY f IRCI'LATION. THURSDAY MORNING Ocl. 4. ISM DAY AKD MIGHT. IT BAYARD TAT LOO. I stood on •HMt'i rnguo frontier. Retween th* bright anil dusks t| km, — The dot thet toils. au<4 sings, end sparklet, Tko night that sooths*, and Mings, sad darkles. And either alrj spirit east, A! lass ate tpella «pws as east; One la hi* rohee of eoi«r basaing. One draped ia sad. mysterious yearning. From border-lands of golden cloud Day smiled an me with tUage proud. Cheek* ruddy-brusn, Up* bright nilh plea •are, And snnbeams ia his eyes of ssurs. Night looked on am with down rati li<l, Beneath the evil her brows ibst hid. A troubled thought her fac* oppressing. And yet bsr aspect breathed ol blessing ! J>ay said IsIm: “My asalm is Mr; No seem dims my crystal air; I wake the Earth*exultant forces, Lift seat, more riven in their eoursee." Night said: “ From out tbs urn I bear, Tbs founts of life their waste repair! 1 feed the streams with den incessant; I round to spheres the waning crescent.” Pay said : “ I langh through my domain ; 1 stir the colls of heart and brain J I lire in joyoau, elear pulsations; I reap the harvests of the nations !“ Night said: “ The empty hearts of Pay Within my cloister learn to pray; I give the truths that prop eodesror: 1 build the faiths that stand for over !* Day said: " Bat. all delights above, 1 lead the loser to bis lore j I paint the blushes, light the glances, And wease the web of dear romances.” Night said: ** I hide the timid cheek, And make the bashful bold to speak ; I shade the lips for trembling kisses. And smooth the couch for nuptial blisses.” Day said: My deeds are brave aad bold; I fight er fight, and beep my gold ; My sons must work where all een witness. [From the London Punch.) ARTEMUB WARD 111 LOUDON. lie makes a Speech at the Oreenlion Tacem—His Political Operations — The Venerable Humorist Fears to Ride with Single Ladies in the Rail trap Coaches. Yon'll be glad to learn that I've made a good impression onto the mind of the lan'Jord of the Greenlion Tavern. He made a speech about me last night. Hisin" in the bar he spoke 89 follows, ihere bein over twenty imlividooals pres ent: ‘‘Th is North American has been a inmate of my 'ouse over two weeks, yit he hasn't made no attempt to scalp any member of mv fnm’ly. He hasn't broke no cups or sassers, or furnitur of any kind. [Hear, bear.] I find I can trust him with lited camlles. He eats his witlles with a knife and fork. Peple of this kind” should lie encurridged-, 1 purpose'is’elth !” [Loud ’plaws.] What could I do but modestly get up and express a fervint hope that the At lantic Cable would bind the two coun tries atill more closely together? The lan'lord said my speech was full of orig’- nality, but his idee was the old stage coach was more safer, and he tlio't the peple would indors the opinyin in doo time. I'm pettiu' on exceedin' well in Lon don. I nee now. however, that I made a mistake in orderin’ my elose afore I left home. The trooth is the taler in our little village owed me for a pig and I didn't see any other way of gettin’ iny pay. Ten years ago these close would no douht been fash’n’blc, and perhaps they would be ekally sim'lar ten years hens. But now they’re differently. The taler said he knew they were all right, because he had a brother in Wales who kept him informed upon London fashins reg’lar. This was a infunns falsehood. But as the ballad says (which I heard a gen’l’man in anew soot of black close and white kid gloves sing t'other night,) Never don't let us Despise a Man be cause he wears a Ragged Coat I I don't know as we do, by the way, tbo’ we gen’- rally get out of his way pretty rappid ; prob'ly on account of the pity which tears our bosoms furhis unhappy condi tion. This last remark is a sirkastic and witherin' thrust at them hlolid pcple who live in gildid saloons. I tho't I'd expiaiu my meatiin' to you. I frekently have to explain the meanin’ of my re marks. I know one man —and he’s a man of varid Tomplishmenta—who often reads my articles over 20 times afore he can make anything of ’em at all. Our skoolmaster to home says this is a pe eoolerrity of gcueyus. My wife says it is a pecoolcrarity of infernal nonsense. She's a exceedin' practycnl woman. I lev her muchly, however, and burner her little wavs. It's u recklis falsehood that she henpecks me, and the young man in our uaherhood who suid to mo one eve ning, as I wns iiiisU-niii’ my diafram with a gentle cocktail at the village; tavun —who said to me in these very lung nidge: "Go home, old man, unless you desires to have another teapot Jhrowd at you by J. 8.,” probly regrets havin' said so. I said, "Betsy Jam; is my wife's front name, gentle youth, and I permits no person touluod to her as J. 8., outside of the family circle, of which I am it principally myself. Yaur ob servations I scorn and disgust, and I must polish you of-" He was a able bodied roan* man, and remooving hia coat, ho inquired if 1 wanted to be ground to |wiwiler T l Said yes; if therw was a powdergrindist hsudy, nothin’ would 'ftird me greater pleasure, when he struck me a pniulul blow into my rixht eye, causin' me to ninke a rapid retreat into the fire-place. I hadn’t no idee that the enemy was to well organised. Bat I rallied and went at him in a ravther vigria alile for my time of life. Hia parunta lived nearby, and 1 will simply state 25 mlnito had ouly elapst after the first act, when he was carried home ou a shutter. His mama met the solium procession at the door, aud after keerfully looking her orfspriug over, she said : ‘‘My son, l see how it ia distinctually. You've been foolin round a thrashing mashcen. You weut in at the place where they put the grain in, cam out with the straw, and you got up into the thingainyjig, aud let the hone tred on yoa, didn’t you, my son ?” The pen of no living Orthur could describe that disforuit young mans silty watiou usorc clearer. But I was Sorry for him, aud went and nussed him till he got well. His reg’lur original lather being absent to the war, 1 told him I’d be a father to him myself He srnilt a sickly smile, and said I’d already been won tbau two lathers to him. I will here obsarve that fitiu orter he alius avoided, excep in extreem cases. My principle is, if a man smites me ou the right cheek I’ll turn ray left to him prob'bly; but if ho insinooates that my graß’mbther wasn't all right, I'll punch his bed. But fitin is niis'ble bisiness, generally apenkin, and whenever any eiiterprisiii countryman of mine coins over here to scoop np a Briton in the prixe ring, I alius excessively tickled wheu he gits scooped hisself, which it is a sad fiack has thus far bin the case— my only sorrer bein that t’other feller wasn’t likewise. It's difTrcntly with sctillin boats, which is a manly sport, and I enn ouly explain Mr. Hamil’s resnut defeat in this country on the grounds that he wasn't used to British waters. I hope this explanation will be satisfactory to all. As I remarked afore, I’m gettin’ on well. I’m aware that I’m in the great metropolis of the world, anil it doesn't make me unhappy to admit the fact. A man is a ass who dispoote it. That's all that ails him. I know there is sum pe ple who cum over here and snap and snarl ’bout this and that. I know one mar. who says it is a shame and a dis grace that St. Paul’s Chnrch isn’t a old er edifice; he says it should be years and even ages older than what it is ; but I decline to hold myself responsible for the conduct of this idyit simply because he is my countryman. I suppose erery civ’lized land is endowed with its full share of gibbering idyits, and it can’t be helpt—leastways I can’t think of any effectooal plan of helpin’ it. I’m a little sorry you’ve got politics over here, but I shall not discuss ’em with nobody. Tear me to peaces with wild omnibus hosses, and I won't dis kuss ’em. I’ve had quite enuff of ’em at borne, thank yon. I was at Binning" ham t'other night, and went to the great ineetiu’ a few minits. I hadn't been in the hall long when a stern lookin' arti zan said to me : “You ar from Wales?’’ "No, I told him I don’t think I was. A hidgyis tho’t passed over me. It was that onprincipled talor, and I said : “Has my clotliiu’ a Welchy appear anee ?” “Npt by no means," he answered, and then he said, “and what's your opinyin of the present crisis ?" I said, "I don't zactly know. Have you got it very bad ?" He replied, "Sir ii is sweepin’ over England like the Cynioon of the Desert!” “Wall,” said I, "let it sweep J” He ceased me by the arm and Baid, "Let us glance at hist’ry. It is now some two thousand years ” •‘ls it, indeed ?’’ I replied. “Listen !” he fiercely cried; "it is only a little over two thousand years since “Oh, bother I" I remark), “let us go out and get some beer.” “No, sir. I want no gross and sen sual beer. I’ll not move from this spot till I can vote. Who aryon ?" I handed him my card, which, in a< > dition to my name, contains a clabril description of my show. “Now sir,” I proudly said, you know me." “I sollumly swear, he sternly replied, that I never heard of you, or your show, in my life 1" “And this man,” I cried bitterly, “calis hisself a intelligent man, and thinks he orter be allowed to vote I What a holler mockery!” I’ve no objection to ev’ry intelligent man votin' if he wauts to. It's k pleas ant antoosement, no douht; but there is those whose igrance is so dense and loatbsum that they shouldn’t be trusted with a bnllit any more’u one of my trained serpunts should be truatid with a child to play with. I went U) the station with a view of returnin' to town on the cars. “This way, sir,” said the guard; “here you ar," and he pointed to a first-class carriage, the sole ockepant of which wus a rayther preposseaui’ female about thirty sum mers. “No, I thunk yon,” I earnestly re plied, "I prefer to walk.” I am, dcur air, very respectfully yours, Aiitkmi'b Wakd.
