Because it is a fine thing—in a horn. —As thrashing separates the corn from the chaff, so does afllictiou purify virtue. Mankind should learn temperance from the moon—the fuller she gets, the shorter her horns become. “I love you,” is all the secret that most women have to tell. When that is said, they are like China crackers on the sth of July. A young lady, if a visitor knocks at the front door, will sometimes send word “engaged,” though she never had ah offer in her life. • —0 dear Imy dear, look at the little dears ! said a lady to her husband as Bhe called his attention to the deer park on the common. Bills of lading are now given on mules from Lexington, Ky., to Atlanta, Ga., all the way by rail, at $167.50 per car. . —An editor out West says: “If we have offended any man in the short but brilliant course of our career, let him send to us anew hat, and say nothing about it.” —A Liverpool tailor recently “raised the wind” by cutting off the tails of a number of coats in the crowd. lie raised too much wind and was blown to prison by it. A paragraph has been going the rounds concerning an old lady who has a moustache on her lip; to which a hate ful cotemporary adds that it is not un common for young ladies to have mous taches on their lips, but it is rarely that they grow there. —ln Providence, R. 1., there are four persons worth over a million apiece and sixteen over $600,000. Exchange. Why, that’s nothing 1 We know of several persons in this city who are not worth a dollar! -If a man sells his watch for fifty dollars, buys it back for forty dollars, then sells it for forty-five dollars, how much docs he make in the transaction ? It looks as if he made fifteen dollars, but he didn’t. —The Bishop of Carlisle (England)re cently asked a youthful scholar if he had read the thirty-nine articles. “No,” said the hoy, “but T have read the Forty xir.eves.'” “You may stand down sir,” said the Bishop. —“Oh,dear!” blubbered out an urchin who had been suffering from the appli cation of the birch. “Oh, my ! they tell me that forty rods make a furlong, but I can tell a bigger story than that.— Let ’em get such a plaguy licking as I’ve had, and they’ll find that one rod makes an acher.” —A wliile ago,a fanner inVirginia lost his wife, and out of love for her memory called his estate “Glenmary.” A neigh bor having met with the same affliction, and equally desirous of keeping before him the image of his dear departed, fol lowed his example, and this farm is now known by the name of “Glenbetsy.” —The individual who tried to clear his conscience with an egg, is now en deavoring to raise his spirits with yeast. If he fails in this, it is his deliberate in tention to blow out his brains with a bellows, and sink calmly into the arms of—a young lady. —To plunge a young lady six fathoms deep in happiness, give her two canary birds, a half-dozen moon-beams, twelve yards of silk, an ice cream, several rose buds, a squeeze of the hand, and the promise of anew bonnet. If she don’t melt it will be because she can’t. —A pretty young A merieaness, whose Christian name is Anna, on receiving a cigar from a young gentleman who had not pluck enough to say he wished to marry her, twirled it playfully beneath her nose, and, looking archly at him, popped the question thus—“ Hav e ?” —Let tho love of your brethren he ns a fire within you, consuming that selfish ness that is so contrary to it and so un natural to men ; let it set ymir thought on work to study how to do others good ; let your love be an active love intense within you, and extending itself in doing good to the souls and bodies of your brethren as they need and you are able. —lt is rumored, observes the Leeds Mercury, —and if there be any founda tion for the rumor it will be deeply and widely regretted—that the Crown-Prin cess (Victoria), of Prussia “sudors some serious mental and physical results from grief at the recent death of her infant son Sigismund, and anxiety for the safety of her husband during the Austrian campaign,” in which he won so much honor. An Arkansas gentlemen was re cently married to a Choctaw belle, Miss Kath-la-no-ke. She is described as being over six feet iu heighth, straight as a pine, swift as a deer, and dear as she’s 3wi(t and straight. —Mobile (Ala.) Tribune. She must, also, have a great deal of originality about her—Ab-originality. A Yankee has developed a breed ot decks that swim in hot water and lay lm id boiled eggs.— Exchange. That is Certainly very w/f/s-traordinary story, but lays it too hard on the ducks. Accident Insurance. INSURE AGAINST ACCIDENTS IN THE PIONEER COMPANY OF THE SOUTn.
