—There is no action of man in this
life which is not the begginning of so

human providence is high enough to
give us a prospect to the end. —Thomas
of Malmsbury.
—One*of ouy exchanges., jn noticing
the presentation of a silver cup to a co

He can drink from any vessel that con

—The city of Tours, in France, has a
statue of the illustrious philosopher
Descartes in one es Its public places,
with the motto on. jtg pedestal,. Cogito,

The citizens, when asked by strangers,
say it is the statue of Monsieur Cogito 1
—A curious circumstance which has
sometimes been noticed, but never care
fully recorded till now, is, that between
twelve and two in the day, and only at
those hours, the Atlantic Cable is always
at its worst in conductive power.
—A New Haven company has begun
the manufacture of a .compressed stone
for buildiug purposes. It made -of

skate in a cutler’s shop -, a plaice on
the top of an omnibus; a sole at the

An officer reproving a boatswain

what we earn, but what we save, that

It is not what we profess, but what we
practice, that make us righteous.
—On the occasion of Mr. Baron Al

the Assizes at Cambridge, Mr. Gunson

A baron, a justice, a preacher, sons three—
The preacher a son of a Gun was he;
The baron he is the son es a tree ;
Whose son the Justice is, I itrfnnot well see—

That the son o(his father the justice may be.
