LA MUST CItT cIBCULATION
WEDNESDAY MORNING ...Oct. IT. IJ*«
BUILD IK G OK THE SAND.
av suss cook.
’Tit well to wo*, 'tli well to wed,
For so U>o world li*lh done
Siaeo myrtles giew sod loses Mow,
And morning brought tho sun.
Bat boro a earo, y« young and fair,
Bo oure yoa pledge with truth ;
Bo oortoin thot your lovu will wear
Boyoad thy days of youth t
For if you havw not boart for hoart.
As wsll a* baud tor hand.
Yea'll find you’vo played the unwise part,
And “built upon ths sand.”
•Tis wall to save, ’tis wolf to havo
A goodly store of gold.
And bold enough of shining scuff.
For charity is cold.
But place aot all your hope and trust
In what the deep mine brings;
Wo cannot live on yellow dust
I’mixed with purer things.
And ho who piles up wealth alone
Will often hare to stand
Beside his eoffer-ehest, and own
'Tis ••built upon the sand.”
’Tis good to speak in kindly guise,
And soothe where’er wo can;
Fair tpeeeh shall blind the human mind,
And love link man to man.
Bat atop not nt the gentle words;
Let deeds with language dwell;
The one who pities starving birds,
Should scatter birds as noli.
The mercy that is warm and true
Must lend a helping hand.
For thoso that talk, yet fail to do,
But “build upon the sand.”
Paris Correspondence of the New Orleans
Picayune.
Training and Trials of Dancing
Girls.
Os all barren callings, perhaps, there
is none more sterile and nngrateftil
than the dancing girls. They are taken
in hand when they are seven years old.
A training school for the first class of
dancing girls is scarcely a less painful
spectacle. The first thing done, is to
place the feet in hollow wooden clamps
or boxes, whose bottom and top are
stoutly strapped together, and which
are moved by straps, so as to bring the
heels of the feet beel to heel, "while the
knee remains turned out. This is ex
tremely pninfnl under any circum
stances ; it is doubly painful when the
poor girl’s feet are swollen and bruised,
as they almost always are. The ex
ercise lasts half an hour. Then for
another half an hour she is obliged to
place first her left and then her right
foot on a wooden bar, which is placed
on a level with her chin. Then they
dance all the steps used in the ballets—
les assembles, les jetes, les balances, les
ronds de jarabe, les foutettes, les cab
rioles, les pointes, les pironettes on thc
instep, les sauts de basque, les pas de
boaree, les entrechats a quatre, a six,
and a bait.
This series of exercises must be par
saed and reviewed all day long, until
exhausted nature sinks. It is said, after
a lesson two hours long, without an in
stant’s pause, M’lle. Marie Taglioni—
the Taglioni—fell half-dead on the floor
of her chamber, and was undressed,
sponged and dressed before she recov
ered consciousness. Her father, who
gave her the lesson, stood by and made
no other comment on the scene, except
to say, “She will be unusually brilliant
to-night.” She was unnsually brilliant
that night. A danscusc shines in her
profession only by this assiduous exer
cise, which is she is seven
years, and ends only with her retirement
from the stage. If she ceases it once—
if she goes to the sea-shore for pleosnre
—if she goes to the medical springs for
recreation—upon her return to Paris she
mast labor three times more than ever
she did to regain her old suppleness and
elasticity and airiness. And woe to her
if idleness brings tiesh ! that flesh must
be dissipated, for flesh is a dancing girl’s
enemy, it will prove her death. People
don’t goto ballets to see quivering jelly.
There are some dancing girls, who either
are naturally stiff, or are ambitious to
shine in their profession.
These exercises are not the only gym
ma .ties resorted to by these step-children
of nature, and these ambitious girl *
They are constantly striving to invent
some new exercise, which shall “turn”
and “break” themselves.
It is said the beautiful M’llc Eugone
Fiorce —ambitious girl—has invented a
process which possesess the advantages of
simultaneous “turning” and “breaking”
her. Bhe lies on the floor of her cham
ber; her face is turned towards the floor.
She then makes her servant, a German
girl of Immense weight, stand on her
back and press with all the weight of her
bodr on the dauseuse, who often finds
the pain so great as to bring forth tears
despite all her efforts. Several rival
dauseuse have tried it, but were unable
to withstand the pain. She says she
orffcs her marvelous lightness to this
exercise, which she repeatedly takes
during the day.
A dauseuse’s pains do not end here.
She has to expose herself almost every
{light she has plays to serious dangers.
There was in the first act of Thcophilc
Bauficr’s ballet, La Peri, so perilous a
leap, the dauseuse who filled the lead
ing part did really place her life in jeo
pardy evefy night she played it- One
evening while Charlotta Grisile was
dancing the part, M. Pcptipas, her
partner, failed to mind his business.
She, lacking the proper support, tell
> down with such violence as to fracture
hrt skull. They are obliged to stand in
the giddiest postures on “ practieables ”
not wider than a lady’s hand. Thevare

Killer.
We beg to call the attention of tho pub
lic to this long tested and unrivalled
FAMILY MEDICINE.
The PAIN KILLER is a purely vegeta
ble compound ; and while it is a most e -
cient Remedy for Pain, it is a perfeetly.safe
Medicine even in the most unskillful hands.
FOR SUMMER COMPLAINT,
Or any other form of howel disease in chil
dren or adults, it is an almost certain cure,
and has, without doubt, been more success
ful in ouring the various kinds of
CHOLERA
than any other known remedy, or even the
most skillful physician. In India, Africa
and China, where this dreadful disease is
ever more or less prevalent, the
PAIN KILLER
is considered by the natives, as well as Eu
ropean residents in those climates, a SURE
REMEDY. Asa Tonic for the Stomach, it
is unrivalled. A few doses will relieve se
vere cases of INDIGESTION, and it is
often a perfect cure lor
DYSPEPSIA,
in its most aggravated forms. Its tonic and
stimulating properties, arousing the system
to vigor and action, render it a most effec
tual cure for COLDS AND COUGHS, when
used according to directions.
For external applications, it is unsur
passed by any medical preparation.
Rheumatism and Neuralgic Affections are
quickly relieved and often cured by it. Any
Soreness in the Muscles or Joints can be
relieved by its application. It cures in
stantly the most violent
TOOTHACHE.
It should always be kept near nt band,
to be used in cases of severo BURNS or
SCALDS. If applied immediately, accord
ing to directions, it will give instant relief,
and prevent blistering.
It is peculiarly adapted to the wants of
SEAMEN, and persons making sea voy.
ages, and no vessel should sail without a
supply of it. Ono Captain writes us; “I
have made several voyages—often with emi
grants, and though I keep a good Medicine
Chest, and I have several times bad a good
deal of sickness on board, I have found the
PAIN KILLER so efficient in all cases, as
to entirely preclude tho use of all other
Medicines.”
