Tbc t itchell Case.—Our readers
will remember that, in August last, two
young men, Moore Mitchell and Leon C.
Whitmore, were reported to here hired’
» horse end baggy from Mr. Dehoney,
and decamped with the same to South
Caroline. They were persued, captured,
aud brought back to this City, and im
prisoned, to await trial at the present
term of the Superior Court.
Yesterday the case of Moore Mitchell
was called, and the trial proceeded with.
The large crowd in attendance upon the
court, and the able.poungel engaged in
it, evidenced the fact that the case was
•ne of more than ordinary interest. The
morning was consumed in the examina
tson of the witnesses, and in the after
noon the Counsel for State and the de
fense went before the Jufy.
Solicitor-General Whitehead and Mr.
Jas. C. C. Black appeared for the State,
while Hon. Alexander H. Stephens
Henry W. Hilliard, and Col. L. D. Lal
lerstedt represented the defendant.
Mr. Black first addressed the Jury, in
a speech, both logical and elegant, and
was fallowed by the Hon. Mr. Hilliard,
in an unusnally brilliant appeal for the
prisoner.
Solicitor-General Whitehead spoke
next. His was a good speech, and the
argument was concluded by the Hon.
Alexauder H. Stephens, who said be
appeared as counsel in the case, not for
fee or reward, but at the request of his
client’s mother. Mr. Stephens spoke at
considetable ■ length, aud with splendid
effect.
After hearing a learned charge from’
Judge Hook, the Jury retired to their
rooms, and soon afterwards returned,
bringing a verdict of “Not Guilty,”
Home Manufactures. —Among the
of onr City is the Tobacco
Manufactory of Nelson Jh Mcllwainr.
They are now putting up three brands of
smoking tobacco, which are superior to
anything in this market. They are
known as “The Great Southern Har.
monizer,” “The Guerrilla Club,” and
“The Bird's Eye.” Those who smoke
should try these tobaccos.
The “ Harmonizer ” is named for
“ Bill Arp,” and cannot be excelled, ft
is what its name imports, and all 'unre
constructed smokers, North and South,
should use it—should “ put it in their
pipes and smoke it j'’ should, in short,
“smoke the calumet of peace” filled
with it, and so harmonize and settle all
difficulties.
These tobaccos are manufactured in
Augusta, and the enterprising proprie
tors ought to be well patronized. We
must take care of our home enterprises.
Not Content. —lt must be gratifying,
indeed, to those whose ideas take the
“go-ahead anti-fogy” turn, to observe
the steadfastness with which the major
part of our people are abandoning the
worn paths of the past, and taking the
brighter aud more attractive ones of
these latter days.
Among those of our merchants and
milliners, who are not content to let
what some call “well enough” alone, we
are pleased to number Messrs. Gray &
Turley, at the foot of each of whose
show windows, we noticed yesterday a
perfectly beautiful metallic sign ; whilst
Mrs. L. G. Fillette’s millinery depot, a
little further up Broad street, one door
above the Palatial Drug Establishment
of Dr. W. H. Tutt, stands without a
rival, both as to the locality and the
happy and attractive style in which the
goods are arranged. Display, Display—
that’s the word now.
John Setze. —“Setze’s Corner” is
familiar to all the old citizens of Au
gusta. Our respected townsman, Mr.
John P. Setze, kept a dry goods store
for a number of years, nnd was succeed
ed by his sons, as J. & A. J. Setze, in
the same business. The war, howevei
broke up the firm, and anew establish
ment took its place.
Now, however, the old familiar name
is applicable, and ‘‘Setze's corner? will
soon become as familiar to the new
residents of Augusta, as to the old ones.
Mr. ,John Setze, as will be seen by
reference to our advertising columns,
has possession of the establishment, and
is fitting up with a fine lot of dry goods,
etc., for the fall and winter trade; and
the old friends of the house as well as
hosts of new ones are expected to
patronize our friend John. At all events
he has our best wishes lor an abundance
of trade.
The Columbia Murder. Messrs.
Isaac Smith, James Kelly, and Edward
Perrin, citizens of Columbia county, Ga.,
charged with the killing of the negro,
Thomas Whiteman, to which we briefly
alluded yesterday, arrived in our: City
yesterday morning, under a guard of
Federal soldiers, having been arrested
by order of General Tillson. They
were, after some consultation between
the counsel of the prisoners' and General
Tillson, turned over to the civil authori
ties to be tried in this county.
The statements of the killing, so far,
are only ex-parte and rather contradic
tory, and we prefer to await an exami
nation before giving any particulars.
The gentlemen arrested are well-known
citizens, and their cases are in the hands
of able counsel. •
They will have a fair and impartial
hearing, and ample justice will be done
all the parties concerned.
For country wear, there is nothing
better than a good brogan; for Sanday
dress, there is nothing better than a
nice boot Or gaiter; and Cohen’s
t# the place to buy them. A fine
assortment of boys’ boots, hand
sewed, just the article for the young
folks. No. 182 J Broad street is the
place. ' j-
Pickled Biibimp.— Joseph J. West,
of Savannah, Ga., keeps a good supply
of pickled shrimps, in quart jars, half
gallon jars, and kegs, at $9.00, $17,00,

—Messrs. V. Richard & Brothers invite
the attention of the public to one of the
