Sulphur comes -fom Vesarius; tiierefore it is good for eruptions. —Ewes are sent'from Illinois to Ver mont to obtain the stock celebrated , —A Cleveland j ail-bird, is seriouijy annoyed by ghosts. . —JlincS says we know a man so clever with his lathe that he can even turn a deaf 1 ear. ' 1 ■—The Texas Legislature has passed a bill for the construction of a street railj nJad in Galveston. ; —The revenue of the bishop of Lon don for the year 1865 exceeded! 10,000/ —Speaking of fashions a French, paper says the ladids are collapsed—in appearance. ~ • —(A (JisJingoUhed African trav eller has met savages who were perfect “ Chesterfields in manner and speech, which however, did not prevent them from being liars and thieves. —Bensou J. Lossing, the pictorial publisher, accompanied by a corps of artists, is visiting the various battle-fields made memorial during the war, in the Shenandoah YAHey. "> —-An institution Blled the Orthopaa ric Dispensary; has been opened in New York for the gratuitous treatment of de formed persons. ; i ~ ; —A London physician reecntly sent a prescrip'ion through the Atlantic Ca ble to a patient ou this aide the water. - —A German has invented a powder that will not explode in the open air eve* when inflamed, but its explosive force when confined is greater than any plosive material yet discovered. y —Jean Ingelow has written a novel which will be published simultaneously in England and the United States. Her short stories are so admirable that a more elaborate production from her pen will be warmly welcomed. —“ Here, you little rascal, walk up and give an account of yourself. \V here have /you been'?’* “After the gir!s j father.” “ Did you ever kuow me to du so when I was a boy?” “No sir, but mother did.” —The Troy Whig says of the current rumor that Mrs. Senator Sprague, the daughter of Chief Justice Chase, has applied for a divorce : “ The habitues of Washington have for many mdtitlis been familiar with the scandals that have grown out of this marriage and its subsequent developments. If only half that is said is true, one party ought to be sent to an inebriate asylum and the to a bagnio in fiew York or a home for the Magdalens.” —A servant girl at a farm house in the vicinity of Guilford, England dreamed one night that the honse was attacked by robbers, and getting up, hid her watch in a roll of butter, where it was found at the tea-table several nights after, to the great surprise of the family and of Sarah, herself, as well. Tub Dry Goods Trade.—The New York Commercial reports a concession in the dry goods 'trade among jobber.--, and adds : Goods are really very low from the combination of circumstances prerenting trade during the summer mouth*, the seas of cholera,' and tho lateness with which trade set in. Stocks were quite large, and prices were rej duced to the lowest possible figure to Attract business, and from these low figures the advance is but small, thus rendering the present prices very low. The advance was chiefly confined to brown sheetings and prints. In brown goods the price is close dowu to the cq6t;Of production, and jobbers seem to *i)e willing to reduce It to correspond with the changes in Cotton, so that there is a-better disposition to take goods, as most buyers believe that Cotton cannot be much lower. Planting Rtf.—The general failure of,-the corn crop throughout the South, demands’ of tfie planters generally to look for some substitute for bread, in place of corn. Rye is the only small grain on which we can rely with certainty to make a crop ; all others take the rust. As Oc tober and November are the proper months foiow it, we would impress upon the minds of planters generally to put as many acres of good land in rye as they can get seed to sow. After cutting what they need, hogs can he allowed to take the balance, and it will come off in time to put in late cotton or potato slips.— Liberty Miss. Herald. Home Like. —Even as the sunbeam is composed of millions of minute rays, the home light must be constituted of little tenderness, kindly looks, sweet langhtef, gentle words, loving counsels ; it must ’not he like the torch blaze of unnatural excitement, which is easily quenched, hut like the serene, chas tened light which burns as safely in the dry east wind as in the stillest atmos phere. Let each bear the other’s bur den tlio while; let each cultivate the mutual confidence which is a gift capa ble of increase and improvement, and soon it will he found that kindness will spring up on every side, displacing constitutional unsuitability, want ot efCn as wo have seen sweeT violets arid primroses dis pelling the gloom of the gray sea rocks.
