Neve* Thaveixki). —A story is told
, pf an did lady Who lived near Rochester,
who bad never seen- or travelled on a
railroad. Wanting to go on a visit io a
small town a short distance from tfe*
city, she thought she would try one of
the pesky things. So she went to the
ticket-office l -, carrying her riticnle on one
arm pod an old-fashioned rocking-chair,
on the other. She bonght her ticket,
walked oat on the platform, put down
her rocking-chair, sat down in it, took
:' out her knitting, and went to work dili
gently. Steadily phe rocked and worked,
trains coming in and leaving as the car
time came round. The old lady made
no attempt to get oo the cars, but kept
knitting.
The day drew to a close, and night
came on. The last train was about
starting, when the depot master went up
and asked her if she was going out.
“ Yes sir,” replied the old lady.
- ’ Hand n’t you better get aboard, and
secure a seat ?” said the depot master.
“ Thank you, sir, I’m very comfort
able,” replied the elderly dame.
The train left. The master came
around again. “ Madam, I shall have
to disturb you, it is late ; the trains have
all left, and we must close the depot.
Shall I send you to a hotel ?”
“ Well,” exclaimed the old lady, drop
ping her knitting and holding up her
hands, ‘‘ain't the thing going to move?
Here I brought my chair from home so
as to have a seat, on which some pesky
conldn't squeeze himself. I’ve set here
all day waitin’for the thing to go, and
. here I’ve had all mv trouble for nothing.
I thought it was a long time moving. I
declare that these here railroads is the
- biggest nuisances and humhpgs as ever
was!” and the old lady, with bag on
one arm and rocking-chair on the other,
gave a toss of .her head and marched
off in high indignation.
She mistook the depot for the cars,
and expected to travel in it.
Washing Silk.— No person should
ever wriug or crush a piece of silk when
it is wet, because the creases thus made
win remain always if the silk is thick
and hard. The way to wash silk is to
spread it smoothly upqna,clean board,
rub it with white soap, and brush it with
a clean hard brush. The silk must be
rubbed until all the grease is extracted;
then the soap should be brushed off
with clean, cold water, applied to both
sides. The cleansing of silk is a very
nice operation. Most of the colors are
liable to be extracted by washing in hot
sods, especially - blue and green colors.
A little alum dissolved in the last water
that is brushed on silk tends to prevent
the colors from running. Alcohol and
camphine, mixed together, ure used for
removing grease from silk.
—A new doige was lately on
a countryman in Philadelphia. He was
asked to give two ‘‘fives”for a ten, which
he did, tolling op the ten with the rest of
his money and patting it in his pocket.
He afterwards discovered that a fine
black silk tltread was fastened to the ten
and hung ont ofhis pocket, by the means
of which they expected to pull out the
whola,of his bills, but it didn't work.
' -‘‘-The Httle darling I he didn't
strike Mrs. Smith's baby a purpose, did
he ? It was a mere accident, wasn't it,
dear?" '“Yes, ma, to be sure it was;
and if he don’t behave hirosfllf, I’ll
crack it again.”

Prom Editors.
The New York Examiner, snys: ,
Every mother and housekeeper mult often
set at s family physieian io the many ill
nesses and accidents that occur among chil
dren and servants. For many of the** esses,
I have used Davis’ Paid Killer, and consider
it an indispensable article in the medicine
box. In diarrhoea, it has been nsqd and
effected eons. For outs and bruis«t, it is
invaluable.
The Editor of the Christian Advocate,
It is areal pleasure to nsto speak favorably
of this article, known almost universally to
be a good and safe remedy for burps and
other pains of the body. It is valaable not
only for colds in the winter, but for various
summer complaints, and should be i* every
family.
A. D. Miller, Editor of Meeeenger, Glens
Falls, N. Y., says :
There is no medicine at the present day' I
value so highly a* Psrr.v Davis’ Vegetable
Pain Killer. I have used it in my family
for years; in every instance it has ploved a
sovereign remedy. I tested its qssiities
to-day on a sovere burn, and found it all
that could be desired.
Mr. John Jackson, of the Calais Adetr
tiser, writes :
I know it to be all It is recommended,
having used it in my family six or seven
years.
The Salem Observer says:
No article of medicino ever attained to
such unbounded popularity and extensive
diffusion. It has penetrated to every part,
even ihc most remote, of tbe known world,
beariug with it its healing influences more
potent than those of the spices of “Araby
the blessed.” We are informed by our
principal druggists, that they sell more of
this article for exportation than of any or
all others, and that th* demand is constanty
increasing.
The Cineinnati Nonpareil, Nov. 14,1849,
says:
Seme of our most prominent citizens and
business men strongly recommend it to the
public as an article of great merit and virtue,
and that they never knew any medicine to
become so deservedly popular in so short a
time.
From Clergymen.
Rev. J. C. Bnomer says :
I have used Perry Davis’ Pain Killer with
great success in cases of cholera infantum,
common bowel complaint, broDchitas,
coughs, colds, etc., and would cheerfully
recommend it as a valuable family medicine.
Rev. J. G- Stearns, says:
I consider it tho best remedy I ever knew
for dyspepsia.
Rev. Edward X. Fuller says :
I have witnessed the beneficial effects of
your Pain Killer in cases of dysentery and
cholera morbus, within a few months past,
and would cheerfully recommend its use to
such as may be suffering from similar dis
eases, as a safe and effectual remedy.
Rev. A. Webster, Editor of the CKrietian
Era, writes:
I have used your Pain Killer for many
years in my family with much satisfaction.
