Perhaps tbe : arithmetic of that Tbwne doesn’t apply to this City. ; What Meteors are.— A4 an uhusuaT interest in this subject appqars to have been excited, some of our readers may Mlish fc know what meteors ire. Scientific writers say shooing stars may, without much impropriety, be Called little CoSiefk. ; Koch jneteor is a B ■fall body, geudrflly of very little density,' revolving aVouF the sun in an elliptic orbit, and governed by the same, laws as the larger planets, jupiter and Saturn. The average numljer of these bodies which encounter the earth every -day is several millions, and still there is .no perceptible decrease from yiear to year. The earth, in its motion about the sun, with a velocity of nineteen : miles pdr?Se ( COiid, is continually encoun tering more or less of these Jodies, and they plunge into our atmosphere with velocities varying from ten to forty miles per second, by which ijaoaiifcheaS is developed sufficient to ignite them, and they are entirely .copiumed,'gene rally iu a-single sectmd, and at an ele. vation of about fifty miles above the earth’s surface. Occasionally we en counter bodies of gtefcter density, which canu'ot be bo readily consumed, and -tljejr reach 4l|Wf«rth’B surface, some times jentirej and : at other times in a fragmentary'(condition. Sample* j of such meteor* aye to-be found ii all mineralogical collections of tlxis country and Europe. ', | The Meteoric Shower. —This grand display j>f feature occurred oil the nights of the F3th'and 14th inst., as (predicted. It was visible in England, ahd in this country in New York, New Haven, Chicago, and "Yefersburpr, though the "cloudy weather prevented a fiil view of it in those cities. In EnglaridTit is described as a most beautiful sight, and continued from nine o’clock P. JJ. to six A. M., some Awelve thousand meteors being counted wfthih that time.
