LABWKST mnIKUILATION.
FRIDAY MORWraO N :;o, RR
—Major W nlkcr, rniumatiding at
Aiken, S. C., has issued an order re
citing that, “in order to carry out the
verbal instructions of the Major General
Commanding Department, to protect the
bonios of families and the rights of the
Ireedmeii, I.icift. AVMJk will! in all Cases
where the property of the colored
people, such as houses, barns, stables,
etc., have been wantonly destroyed,
cause the residents of the immediate
vicinity to rebuild the same) wnd iu ease
of their refusal lb’ coinply with' such
order, the buildings so destroyed are to
be ereeled under the direction of Lieut.
Walsh, who will fetry a tar trpno.the
surrounding residents of a proportion
sullicient to defray the expenses of the
United States Government.”
Detachment of troops have, we are
in for mad, been scattered through that
portion of Edgefield District known as
the Kidge. The negroes have been
raiding on the swiue in that region, and
therefor the whites have been punishing
said thieves, hettae the praseuce of
“armed men 1”
Korn Kobb at the Rifle Match.
I have not at present, Mr. Editor, the
hrtnor to belong to any military organ
ization. I’m neither horse, fool, nor ar
tillery, but I feel that within me which
tells tne I could be. any or all three if
circumstanees required it. 1 have served,
though. I’ve been where the eaunons
loudly roar, etc. In the short and de
cisive campaigns of the Home Guard I
was among the foremost in the fierce
conlliet, but the pay (crackers, cheese,
and beer, which we had to buy for our.
selves), not being commensurate with
my abilities, I resigned my commission
and retired into private life. The mili
tary spirit is, however, still strong in uiy
noble bosom, and when the last tourna
ment called our country to arms, I bor
rowed a rifle and went out to the Cove,
determined to show the enemies of Can
ada and of Britain that we Canucks are
not he sneezed at. I like war —it’s a
capital institution—l mean war at u tar
get, because, you see, the target can
not shoot back at you. But as for
that other sort of thing, where the other
fellow peppers away at you as fast as
you blaze away at him, and perhaps a
good deal faster—bah ! its disgusting,
and should not be tolerated in civilized
society.
Not being acquainted with the where
abouts ol the range, I was obliged to cal;
at all the taverns which I passed to
inquire my wav ; the consequence of
which was that I arrived on the ground
in good spirits, feeling quite confident
that I could hit the bull’s eye, or any
other eye, every time. There was a
great crowd of warriors assembled, and
as I marched up with my head erect
an l my musket grounded over my left
shoulder, I could see that they all envied
my martial figure. I took my position
at the stand, muttering to myself, “now’s
the day and now’s the hour, see the
front of battle lour,” and loading my
rifle with great precision, I shut both
eyes and blazed away. No ! on second
consideration, did not blaze away ; the
confounded thinjj wouldn’t go oft".
Frantically rammed in another charge
—still no go ; put in another, two more,
three more, but still “all was quiet on
the Potomac.” I regret to say that I
made use of some expletives more
pointed than polite in reference to the
rifle, but the exigencies of the case
demanded no half-and-half measures. A
military gentleman, who was looking
on, offered to lire a few shots to show
me how it was done ; and thanking him
for his kindness, I handed him thedeadly
weapon.
Putting a cap on the thingumbob,
which I had neglected to do, he said,
“ You just take it in this manner, bring
it up to your shoulder thus, and” .
The rest of the explanation, which I
have no doubt would have-been very in
teresting, was unfortunately lost, for the
whole eight charges went off with a
hang, taking the barrel with them, while
my military friend, with the remainder
ol the rifle, made a flank movement
with detachments into a neighboring
tree. Retired i.n disgust to the refresh
ment tent to collect my thoughts. Bor
rowed another rifle and went out to try
it again. Lucky this time. Hit the
bull's eye sixteen times in succession.
Knocked the target into smithereens.
Ordered another target, and brandy and
water all around. Proprietor demanded
prompt payment for his refreshments.
Told proprietor to go to thunder. Pro.
prietor wouldn’t go to thunder, must
have his pay. Referred him to the city
council.
Blazed away again. Hit everything.
Hit a fifty tbirder, winged a couple of
the sixtieth, and‘caromed on a big
Dutchman who was up a tree gathering
beechnuts. Got excited, rammed the
cartridge down my bootleg, and tried to
load the rifle with my pocket-handker
chief. Fancied I was the target, and
fired twenty two rounds of ball cart
ridges through my coat tail. Discovered
the prizes done up nicely in a small
wooden box. Made a good shot this
time, and carried them all off. Big
military man remonstrated with me
gently with the butt end of his rifle.
Was obliged to succomb to superior
force. (iave up the prizes, aud left the
field in disgust.
I have done with the profession of
ar ms, Mr. Editor. I go on the war path
no more. I have buried the hatchet,
that is to say I lie rifle, forever; ami the
empire from this time forward is peace.
