P.EMAHK4BLE CaSK-CE FKLINE Re
schrectjox.—Me have never known
the truth of the declaration that “a cat
has nine lives,” so fur substantiated us
by an occurrence at Malden a few days
since. One day, in one of our most re
spectable lamiiies, a favorite cat was
found dead on the floor. The house
girl took her up aud buried her in the ash
heap. Two or three days afterwards
the same cat was found in the housei
looking around for something to eat.
The family thought they must be mis
taken in the identity of the cat. They
consequently examined the ash heap <
and sure enough pussy was gone, and is
now about the house as usual. —Boston
Traveller.
Canadian Agitation. —The Cana
dians are agitating the question of an
nexation to the United States. A large
meeting of the friends of the movement
was held at Toronto on Wednesday
evening, and great enthusiasm prevailed.
It is difficult to conjecture rightly what
the result of This popular feeling will he.
It would indicate a strong dissatisfaction
with the dominant government, which,
if well grounded and Buffered to con
tinue, tnav result in war with England
on the part of her provincial subjects.
It may be, however, that this desire for
annexation is confined to a few restless
spirits, whose .love of change would lead
them to attempt the submission of any
government, however wieldy in authority
or considerate in its laws. If this be
the case, this agitation will be productive
of small results, and the attempt at sep
ination will rather excite the ridicule
than the fear of the English Govern
went. Whatever may have been the
character of the British rule in other
colonies, it has been signally mild and
merciful iu-the Canadas. Even the most
bitter opponent of monarchy cannot tint
admit its leniency toward its North
American subject*. If its whole history
as a ruling power had been as free from
criticisms as its exercise of authority in
the Canadas and other provinces in their
vicinity, it would have done much to
commend its system of government as
an example to the world in every way
worthy of imitation.
Something New in Photography.—
The New York Evening Post says, a
new application of photography lias been
made by an artist of that City. By the
u.-.e of the Solar Camera, the image of
tho sitter is transformed to a block of
clay; the linos being so firmly fixed that
the sculptor, to whose hands the work is
afterwards confided, is enabled to pro
duce a perfect likeness of the original.
An intaglio is sunk from which plaster
castes arc Jjaken, and all the varieties of
bronze, Parian marble, etc., arc pro
duced.
A New Way of Making Paper.—
A company of capitalists are about
purchasing a factory at Amboy, New
Jersey, for the purpose of locating there
a mammoth paper manufactory, using
for stock the sea grass which grows so
abundantly in that vicinity; and from
which an excellent quality of paper is
manufactured.
The Reading Wom.n. - Gohidgc thus
aptly classifies (lie reading world '
1. Sponges, who absorb all they real,
and return it in the same state, only a
little dirted.
2. Faitd-gln r soB, who retain nothing,
rind are content to get through a book
lor the sake of getting through the time.
3. Strain-bag*, who retain merely the
dregs of what they read.
4. Moral diamonds, equally rare and
profitable, who profit by what they lead,
uud enable olLeio to profit by it also.

Opinions of the Press, Clergy, Etc.
Hu vill make n Jetc short extracts from
the many Testimonial* we have received from
time to time, unsolicited.
From Editors.
The New York Examiner, pays:
Every mother and housekeeper must often
act as a family physician in the many ill
nesses and accidents that occur among chil
dren and servants. For many of these cases,
I have used Davis’ Pain Killer, and consider
it nu indispensable article in the medicine
box. In diarrhoea, it has been used and
oflWted '•ures. For cuts and bruises, it is
invaluable.
The Editor' of tho Christian Advocate ,
says :
It is a real pleasure to us to speak favorably
of this article, known almost universally to
be a good and safe remedy for burns and
other pains of tho body. Jt is valuable mot.
only for colds in the winter, but for various
summer Complaint*, and should be iu every
family.
A. J>. Miller, Editor of Messenger, Glens
Falls, N. Y., says :
There is no medicine at the present day I
value so highly as Perry Davis’ Vegetable
Pain Killer. I have used it in my family
for years; in every instance it lias proved a
sovereign remedy. I tested its qualities
to-day on a severe burn, and found it all
that could be desired.
Mr. John Jackson, of the Calais Adver
tiser, writes :
I know it to be nil it is recommended,
having used it in my family six or seven
j’cars.
The Salem Observer says :
No article of medicine ever attained to
such unbounded popularity and extonsivo
diffusion. It has penetrated to every part,
even the most remote, of the known world,
bearing with it its healing influences more
potent than those of the spices of “Araby
the blessed.” Wo are informed by our
principal druggists, t-liat they sell more of
this article for exportation than of any or
all others, and that tho demand is constanty
increasing.
The Cincinnati Nonpareil, Nov. 14, 1849,
says :
Seine of our most prominent citizens and
businoss men strongly recommend it to tho
public a? an article of great merit and virtue,
and that they never knew any medicine to
become so deservedly popular in so short a
time.
From Ciergymen.
Rev. J. O. Boomer says :
1 have used Perry Davis’ Pain Killer with
great success in cases of cholora infantum,
common bowel complaint, bronchitas,
coughs, colds, etc., and would cheerfully
recommend it as a valuable family medicine.
Rev. J. G. Stearns, says;
I Consider it the best remedy I ever knew
for dyspepsia.
Rev. Edward X. Fuller says :
I have witnessed the beneficial effects of
your Pain Killer in cases of dysentery and
cholera morbus, within a few months past,
and would cheerfully recommend its use to
such as may be suffering from similar dis
eases, as a safe ami effectual remedy.
Rev. A. Webster, Editor of the Christian
Era. writos:
I havo used- your Pain Killer for many
years in mv family with much satisfaction.
