The facts of the case have not been made public, but it is said that aseoonas the matter is fully investi gated it will result in the discharge of some twenty employees. —The silver wedding of A. S. Barnes, the prominent book publisher of New York, was celebrated on Saturday week. Mrs. Barnes received from her husband a present of a magnificent breastpin, whose central stone was a diamond, representing the wife and mother; around this ten pearls were set, repre senting the ten children ; these in turn were encircled by twenty five gaenets, indicating the years of married life, and the outer circlet of fifty diamonds signi. tied the age of the husband. On the reverse were inscribed the dates of the engagement, marriage, aud silver wed ding. Shortness of Time in Dreams. —One of the most remarkable phenomena connected with dreams is the shortness of time needed for their consummation. Lord Brougham says that in dictating a man may frequently fall asleep after uttering a few words, and be awakened by the amanuensis repeating the last word to show he has written the whole; but, though five or six seconds only have elapsed between the delivery of the sen tence and its transfer to paper, the sleeper may have passed through a dream extending through haif a life time. Lord Holland, and Mr. Babbage both confirmed this theory. The one was listening to a friend reading aloud, and slept from the beginning of one' sentence to the latter part of the sen tence immediately succeeding; yet during this time he had a dream, the particulars of which would have taken more than a quarter of an hour to write. Mr. Babbage dreamed a succession of events, and woke in time to hear the conclnding words of a friend’s answer to a question he had just put him. One man was liable to a feeling of suffoca tion, accompanied by a dream of a skelleton grasping his throat whenever he slept in a lying posture, and had an attendant to wake him the moment he sank down. But though awakened the moment he began to sink, that time sufficed for a long struggle with the skeleton. Another man dreamed that he crossed the Atlantic, spent a fort night in America, and fell overboard when embarking to return, yet his sleep had not lasted more than ten minutes. Gold and Silver. —For the current year, 1866, the aggregate gold and silver products of the United States is esti mated from $82,000,000 to f 106,000,000. The details of the largest estimate are, that California will produce $25,000,000; Montana, $18,000,000; Nevada, $16,- 000,00; Idaho, $17,000,000; Oregon, $8,000,000; Colorado, $17,000,000; and various other sources, $5,000,000; total, $106,000,000. Vancouver’s Island. —The pooplaof Victoria, Vancouver's Island, have pc' titioned Queen Victoria to allow the colony to withdraw from the British and annex itself to the United States Gov ernment.
