" I’ve but another prnyer to breathe—and may this. too. be given— Saved with the glorified abort*—be thine a home in tin von. Alum.-!it*. On., December HU. 1806. Important Fact.—Man)- portions who use kerosene or coal oil lamps are in the habit, when going to bed. or leaving the room for * time, of turning the wick down low, in order to save a trilie of the consumption of oil. The conse quence is tiiat the air of the room soon becomes vitiated by the uncousumed oil vapors, by the gas produced by combus tion, and also by the minute particles of smoke aud soot which urc thrown ofl. Air thus poisoned is deleterious in its effects, and tie wonder is tiiat persons are not faulty injured by breathing it. Irritation and inflammation of the throat aud lungs, headache, dizziness and nausea are among the more immediate results. Then again, there is considerable danger in thus turning the wick down. We heard, some days ngo, of an instance of a gentleman, who on absenting him self from his room, pursued the above mentioned course, and a half hour after ward returned to find the lamp ex plode!. Examination into the cause of the explosion proved that, by some almost inexplicable means, the. flame had found its way into the hotly of the lamp, wholly consuming that portion of the wit that was tb -rein. A Jewish CornciA—The Gazcih Dr France, Blinding to the Jewish Cofincil which is to assemble in Puri next year, remarks that the meeting will be especially called on to decide tin following questions: The abolition of the prohibition of certain articles of food : the suppression of which exists among the Jews in Al geria, and the recognition of female children as equally qualified to inherit in that country with males. The French Government is s.iid to ho very anxious for the reforms relating to the African colony, as there arc in Algiers forty thousand Jewish families, composed of industrious people, who arc rmt subject to the general laws of the civil code.
