Washington*, Esq. —\W nre pained to announce the death out lift* gentleman, which took place on the tttjboittg ot tho Hist ult. His caused by a congestive chill which he survived but n tew hours. His ago nns 57 years ami four months. lie has lon/ been kuown as a resident of this eity, during which time he has held many responsible trusts. Among them —as Agent of the State Hank, Al derman, and Mayor of the City, a mem ber of the Legislature, and held the office ol Postmaster since tho war, iu ail of which capacities he fulfilled his du ties to the entire satisfaction of the community. Wo hare, in him, lost a good and usetul citizen, always ready to a< t in every public enterprise with fore sight and energy, and has contributed his lull share to the interests of our eity. —.ViKvit Journal and eager. Sir John just received from M. John’s New Bruns wick, states that a part of tho crew of the American Whale Ship Antelope, 1c9t4.11 October (itli, bad arrived 011 the steamers Wolf and I.ion. The dicers of the Ante lope bring interesting information of discoveries made by C. F. Hall, re specting tho Fraukliu expedition. Mr. Hull has in his possession a gold watch, some silver spoons, and other relics, supposed to have belonged to the Frank lin party. He has also learned that the remains of some of Franklin's men were lying under a boat in Committee Hay, where they had been placed by the natives after death. The natives would not permit Mr. Hull to go on to examine them, hut as several vessels w ill winter* in Repulse Hay, it is be lieved Mr. Hall will secure assistance and push his way to where the remains are situated. No More Hair Markets.— A curious decree has been issued by the Municipal Council of tho department of Correge. That august assembly met last month in high council, and decided that the practice so prevalent of late years for the young women of Normandy ami of Brittany to sell their hair in the market places of their respective vil luges, was highly immoral, and therefore passed a statute forbidding the practice. The custom lias been tlint those who wish to dispose of their eKevehtre should wear bright ribbons ill their chignon, which wi re synonymous with the words, “ Look at my hair, it is for sale.” Hair vendors were then privileged to go up to the girl, untie the ribbons, examine the hair, and bargain as to its price. As soon as the knotty point was de cided, the purchaser, nrjjted with scis sors, cut otF his merchandise, leaving but a few short curls in front. Banking Explained. —Old Mr. I.c fevre's illustration of the theory of banking to a customer, whose account was almost always overdrawn, certainly rivals the best treatise on that subject. Watching the customer, lie caught him one day at the counter, and said to him: ‘ Mr. Y., you and jl must understand each other something better than we now seem to. lam afraid you don’t know what banking really is ; give me leave to tell you. It's my business to take care of your money, but I liud you are always taking cure of mine. Now, that is not banking, Mr. Y.; it must he the other way—l'm the banker, not you. You understand me now, Mr. Y., I'm sure you do.’’ Queen VicroitiA Buying Egos.— One forenoon last autumn, as Queen Victoria, many miles distant from her Life Guards, was taking a solitary walk along a piTblic road in the vicinity of Balmoral, she met a country woman carrying a basket of eggs, with whom she entered into conversation. Iu reply to a question put to her, the basket-carrier said she was going with her eggs to the place —a name given to the Balmoral by the Highlanders, to distinguish it from any other place in the world. “Do you get a good price for your eggs?” inquired her Majesty. “Sometimes,” replied the woman, “hut we aye get the best price when the Queen comes.” On this her Majesty offered to purchase the contents of the basket, and tendered a golden sovereign iu exchange. “I connot break it, my leddy,”—meaning that she bad not change enough. “O, never mind,” said the Queen ; “if you cannot break it you must keep it whole. Take your eggs to the plane, and tell the people there that the Queen has paid for them.” Tho hon»st woman started hack with up lifted hands, aud, with joy and surprise pictured iu her face, exclaimed—“ls it your ainsel, Mistress Albert? Is it your aitisel?” The End of all Things. —Rev. Dr. Cummnigs, we see by the latest literary announcements in London, is about to put to press another book, entitled, “The sounding of the Last Trumpet, or the Last Woe.” The Doctor in this work kindly postpones the day of doom till 1870. As all his predictions hereto fore have been melancholy failures, so we may humbly hope that the one he now puts forth is equally wide of the mark. THE DAILY PRESS. VOL. 11. Medicinal. SP.
