SUNDAY MORNING Dm. i«. uu THE EIGHT ATTACK. * 1i .lumber the Soldier «u taking bin rest, The ourtain of darkness was hanging around The cold damps of midnight his bivouac iuve.6 Nought sholtnr'd from Haar'n and lie lay on tho fIMUDd, Tho* wr> pita a rug, with his gun he i» found. X« and ailcnoo, tho camp was ra poamg; No sound save the sentinel* measur'd tread h**rd; The cricket and night-beetle seem’d to be dobing; The whippoowills carol, and every night bird— And whistling winds quiet—for not a leaf stirr’d. Tranquility reign’d; from late scenes of com* motion, In calmest repose, round their camp fires lay Each soldier in harness, with steady devotion To the cause of his couutry—they fought without pay— Tatter'd, shoeless, and hungry, for many a day. The soldier lad slept, but his comforts were few ; Tir’d nature was resting from action and strife. While stretch’d on tho ground render’d we by toe dew, Bis dreams were of Heav’nand th’ transports of life, In scenes most resplendent with happiuess rife. In fancy he visits the home he has lost; A father receives him in rapture of tears; A m ther's embraces pav lull f«>r the cost The wounds of the battle, and bereavement of years: All wrongs are redress’d, no more sorrows nor fears. The smouldering rums of the home of his childhood, The desolate hearth, where he lisp’d his first prayer; The orchard destroy’d, and -evergreen wild, wood. The rose and the myrtle, the apple and pear, Spring each into being, as when he was there. On wings of affection he hastens to meet The maid of his bosom, so lovely to greet; And closely he kisses the ruby lips sweet, And feels as he presses the throbbing heart beat Love’s joyous moments in fancy complete. A spring tide of blessedness rolls a bright wave. In triumph of victory, felicity won— In peace, love, and friendship there is nothing to crave ; His battles are over, bis last work is done, Ecstatic his thoughts, as they steal ou his tongue. Hark! whence is that noise, making stoutest hearts quail; Like low rumbling thunder, it breaks his re pose ; The rolling artillery, the sentinel's hail— While onward come rushing a squadron of foes, He springs from the ground to contest it in blows. Commotion and tumult loud sounding alarms, With clarion bugles and cavalry tramp, Long rolls of the drums, which are beating to arms, Asa storm, or an earthquake, from fos?e and ramp, Like Hell’s pandemonium, it rouses the camp. Where loudest tho shouting, the fury and strife, The deep booming cannon, with quick lurid glare, ’Mid yells of keen anguish, and death strug gles rife; The deadly aim’d rifle, the sword and the spear, The soldier lad, true to his duty, is there. H® fights not in vain, hand to hand with the brave, Counts life but a trifle his country to save; Full many a wound he receiv’d and he gave E’er Death his dark pinions over him wave, Remorseless his scythe to cut down for the grave. He sinks to the ground, but defeated tho foe. From efforts like his superhuman, are gone; While life’s purple current is ceasing to flow, His soul to the mansions or angels is borne— The bravest and noblest thus leave us to mourn. No arm had he near to lean on, his last stay, No father, n„ mother, no sister, nor friend, His kin over mountains and valleys away. Shall see him no more until time be at end; He fought his last battle hi glory t’ascend. E’er 801 in his course had attained the mid sky, With many his cold manly form was laid low. The greatest of heroes are they who will die, When wounded, and wounded still flgbtiug the foe. They heed not the bullet, the thrust, nor tha blow. 0, soldier lad! sweet was thy vision bo bright, That last ray of happiness dancM o’er thy tomb, That sunshine of pleasure went down for the night Os eternity stamping the seal of thy doom; The grave and the worm foreshadow in gloom. No more sbalt'thou heed to the fierce battle cry, No more be disturbed by the clamors of war, Earth’s cares to thee end, an All-seeing Eye Gives rest to the weary; He sees from afar, And guides in its course each particular star. The clod of the valley enshrines thy brava breast Here, here shalt thou Urry, while ages shall roll, Till the last sounding trumpet shall break up thy rest, Earth yield up her dead, from the Line to the Pole, And give in Elysium pc.ce to thy soul. He who is passionate and hasty is generally honest. It is your old, dis sembling hypocrite of whom you should beware. There’s no deception in a bull dog; it is only the cur that sneaks up and bites you when your back is turned. —Gold is the only idol that is wor shipped in all lands without a temple, and by all sects without hypocrisy. —lt is reported that ou the death of the Tycoon of Japan, ten high digni taries demanded the unspeakable favor of being allowed to rip themselves up in honor of the deceased ruler. Five only were deemed worthy, the others not being sufficiently noble to receive it. —Did you ever know a merchant who did not sell “ tcu per cent cheaper than any other merchant in town ?
