the railroad companies and hotels to
a small way. His plan was this : From
Montgomery, on the 4th of feat

Baltimore, Maryland, a package said to
contain $1,7*29. From Baltimore the
package was Ordered to this place, and
from this place to Fort J alley, Ga.
Another package was scut oa toe same
day, by the same means, to James
KUipatriek at Cotumhus, Ga., from
Major Emmett. The latter parcel was
Wid. to contain A2JB&. -By sahihittng
the receipts .fog theaa. packages, and
stating that-he had no money with
which to pay Ms ford, he swindled the
ttobodd-oui Os. hi* farerfrom
iy to Columbus. At Opelika he swin
dled the hotel keeper, out of his bill, and
did foe same way at bis boarding bouse
in Columbus, and at various other plaCei.
The plages are bogus, containing,
instead of money, bits ut newspaper
aad pamphlets. At one place this
chap would pars as Major Emmett, at
another as Captaia Roundtree, and at a
third by some other name. It is not
known whether' Emmett has succeeded
in bis attempts at swj*dliaj,lo a greater
extent than wc have expressed, but it Is
certain that he coaid have swindled the
unsuspicious so a very large amount by
selling the receipts for the packages
wbifh he had shipped.
He had been “spotted” and the Ex,
press officials had anteye on him. On bis
arrival at»Maoon, he proceeded to (hi
office of the Express Company, obtained
one of their envelopes, returned to his
room at the Brown House, and, when
arrested, had just filled , the envelope.
